Champions League league phase explained - how 36 clubs and 8 matches sort into the last 16

Matchday 1 of 8 is done and the next one is October 14. Top eight go straight to the last 16, ninth to 24th into a playoff round, 25th and below are out. After one match all 36 clubs can still finish anywhere in the table, and the only lines drawn so far are tiebreak lines, not points lines.
