Champions League elimination zone 2026-27: one goal splits 24th from 25th, bottom 12 have 7 goals

One goal separates 24th place from 25th in the Champions League league phase, and 25th is where a club's competition ends. Slavia Prague fill the 24th place having scored two. They are joint 22nd with Club Brugge and Lille, level on every criterion UEFA applies before matchday 8, and listed last of the three alphabetically. Atletico Madrid, joint 25th with Inter, fill the 25th place having scored one. The two are level on points, both on zero, and level on goal difference, both on minus one. Below that line sit twelve clubs who have scored seven goals between them and conceded 38.

Every figure here is calculated from the September 11 update, which covers the 18 matches of matchday 1 and nothing else. No Champions League match has been played since. The next one is October 14, so this is the table the competition sits on today.

The twelve are Atletico Madrid and Inter, joint 25th, LASK and Napoli, joint 27th, Galatasaray and Viking, joint 29th, then Porto 31st, RB Leipzig 32nd, Feyenoord 33rd, Sabah 34th, Slovan Bratislava 35th and Bodo/Glimt 36th. The top eight go straight to the last 16, ninth through 24th go to the playoff round, and 25th and below are out. All twelve lost on matchday 1, and so did the four clubs immediately above them. Sixteen clubs lost in all, they fill 21st through 36th, and every one of them is on zero points. The cut between 24th and 25th therefore runs through the middle of a block with identical records.

Because those sixteen are level on points, goals decide the order, and the tiebreak drawing the line is not goal difference. Slavia Prague and Atletico Madrid are both on minus one. Slavia scored twice and lost 2-3 at home to Lens. Atletico scored once and conceded twice. That single goal is the whole distance between the playoff round and elimination today. The four clubs above the line are even harder to tell apart than that: Villarreal, Club Brugge, Lille and Slavia all lost by the same 2-3 scoreline. Five of the twelve clubs below the line did not score at all on matchday 1, those being Napoli, LASK, Porto, Sabah and Bodo/Glimt. The tiebreak currently drawing the line is the one those five have nothing in.

Inside the zone the margins spread out. Four clubs lost by a single goal: Atletico Madrid, Inter, Napoli and LASK. Three lost by two: Galatasaray, Viking and Porto. RB Leipzig lost 1-4 at Como. Then it widens. Feyenoord finished four goals down and Sabah were beaten 0-4 at Manchester United. Slovan Bratislava conceded six, and Bodo/Glimt lost 0-5 at Bayern Munich. Bodo/Glimt are last rather than 35th because they carry minus five with no goals, while Slovan carry minus five with one. From 36th to 24th is four goals of goal difference and two goals scored, and those are the only numbers any of these clubs currently own.

The engine works in points only. Goal difference and goals scored order the table on screen, but they play no part in the clinch and tragic arithmetic, so all sixteen clubs on zero points carry an identical set of numbers. The survival numbers it does post all point at the same total. A club on three points needs 19 more to guarantee a top-24 finish, which is six wins and a draw and takes it to 22. A club on one point needs all 21 still available to it, a clean seven wins, which also lands on 22. A club on zero points can reach only 21 and therefore carries no number at all. Winning all seven remaining matches does not make survival certain for any of the sixteen.

Against a top-eight finish, the twelve carry a tragic number of seven. So do the four clubs above the line and the four clubs on a single point, which is twenty clubs that failed to win on matchday 1 sharing one figure. Each of those twenty has exactly seven matches left. The two numbers being equal is the emptiest form the figure takes, because nothing short of losing all seven puts a top-eight place out of reach. Against elimination the engine posts nothing at all, for any of the 36. Every club still has a best reachable finish of first and a worst of 36th. Eighteen of the league phase's 144 matches have been played and 126 remain, and not one club has been eliminated by arithmetic. No club carries a clinch number for a top-eight place either, the sixteen matchday 1 winners included.

Matchday 2 runs on October 14 and 15, nine matches on each of the two days. Twelve of the 18 involve a club currently 25th or lower. That is every one of the twelve, and not one of them is drawn against another. Ten of the twelve play at home, with only Napoli and Porto travelling. Three fixtures put two clubs on zero points against each other, and all three fall on October 14: Villarreal in 21st host Napoli, joint 27th, Inter, joint 25th, host Club Brugge, joint 22nd, and Sabah in 34th host Slavia Prague, joint 22nd and in the 24th place. Each of those three takes at least one club off zero, and a winner opens three points of daylight on a line currently drawn with one goal. The rest of the zone draws heavier work. On the 14th, Atletico Madrid host Manchester United in fourth, Galatasaray host Barcelona in third, Viking host Bayern Munich in second, and RB Leipzig host PSV Eindhoven, joint 19th. On the 15th, Bodo/Glimt host Borussia Dortmund in 12th, LASK host Liverpool, joint 13th, Slovan Bratislava host VfB Stuttgart, joint sixth, Feyenoord host Como in fifth, and Porto go to Real Betis, joint ninth. Two of the nine on October 14 have no bottom-twelve club in them, Arsenal at home to Lille and Sporting CP away at Lens, and six of the 18 across the full round have none.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number, also called a magic number, is the smallest amount a club must still add to guarantee an outcome even if every rival wins everything it has left. A tragic number is the further defeats after which the outcome is impossible even if the club wins everything left, and it is always attached to a named outcome, so a top-eight tragic number and an elimination tragic number are different figures. A blank means the arithmetic does not yet produce a number in that direction. The best and worst figures are the highest and lowest positions still reachable. Ties are counted against the club being judged. On the clinch side a rival who can pull exactly level counts as a threat, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a day. On the elimination side only a rival who can finish strictly above counts, so a tie alone cannot eliminate anybody. Goal difference, head-to-head fixtures and the competition's own tiebreakers are not part of the calculation.
