How the league phase works

  1. 1.All 36 clubs play eight different opponents and share a single table. There are no groups.
  2. 2.The top eight go straight to the Round of 16.
  3. 3.Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff for the remaining Round of 16 places.
  4. 4.Teams ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated. Ties are broken by goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins; from matchday 8 the opponents' combined record also counts (UEFA regulations, Article 18).

How standings are ranked

Ranked by points (win 3, draw 1, loss 0). Ties are broken by goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, wins, then away wins. Up to matchday 7 those are the only criteria, and clubs level on all of them share a rank, as in UEFA's own table (two clubs joint 6th are followed by 8th); within a shared rank they are listed alphabetically by UEFA short name. From matchday 8 the combined points, goal difference and goals scored of the league-phase opponents each club has played come next, and every club gets a rank of its own. UEFA's last two steps, disciplinary points and club coefficient, are not in our data, so alphabetical order stands in for them.
