Champions League 2026-27 league phase: 22 points clinches a top 24 place and 16 clubs cannot reach it

Twenty two points guarantees a club a top 24 finish in the Champions League league phase, and 16 of the 36 clubs can no longer reach 22. One matchday of eight has been played, and it is what made that guarantee available in the first place. Before it every club sat on zero with 24 points still to play for, so every rival could match any total anyone could reach and no club carried a clinch figure at all. Matchday 1 created the column and put 20 clubs on it. The 16 that lost never got on.

Every figure here is as of the September 11 update, which is also the last day a match in this competition was played. Matchday 1 ran across September 9, 10 and 11, six matches a night, and produced 18 results, one match for each of the 36 clubs. Today is September 21 and the next fixture is dated October 14. The gap between the two matchdays is 33 days, 23 of them still to run, and nothing is scheduled in between, so the table on the league phase page is the table matchday 1 left behind.

Each club plays eight matches and can bank at most 24 points. The top 24 guarantee starts at 22 because a club sitting on 22 has only 19 rivals who can still reach 22 or more: the other 15 matchday 1 winners and the four clubs that drew. Nineteen clubs finishing at or above you still leaves you 20th at worst, and the top 24 go through while the bottom 12 are out. At 21 points nothing is guaranteed, because all 35 rivals can still reach 21, and a rival who can pull exactly level with you counts as a threat in this calculation.

That one line splits the field three ways. The 16 clubs that won on matchday 1 sit on three points and need 19 more of the 21 still available to them. The four that drew, Roma, PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce and Shakhtar Donetsk, sit on one point and need all 21, which means winning every one of their seven remaining matches. The 16 that lost sit on zero, top out at 21, and so that column is blank for them. Nothing they do by themselves secures a top 24 place, so their route runs through rivals dropping points rather than through their own results.

Higher up, the columns are empty for everyone. Not one of the 36 clubs carries a clinch figure for a top eight place, and not one carries a clinch figure for first. A club on three points reaches the ceiling of 24 only by winning all seven it has left, and even at 24 there are 15 other clubs who can also reach 24. A top eight guarantee needs fewer than eight rivals capable of drawing level or going past, and 15 is not close to that. While every rival can still win everything, the guarantee is not available at any points total, and it only becomes available once rivals start losing.

The elimination side is emptier still. Not one of the 36 carries an elimination number for the competition itself, the figure that would say how many more defeats end a top 24 finish. To be out that way, 24 clubs have to be sitting above your ceiling already. A club that lost its opener and then loses all seven remaining matches finishes on zero, and only 20 clubs have any points at all. Twenty is not 24, so that column is blank across the whole table and stays blank until the field separates.

The one elimination figure that does exist is seven, and it belongs to the 20 clubs that did not win. It applies to the top eight race, not to survival. Lose all seven of your remaining matches and your ceiling is whatever you hold now, zero or one point, and at least 16 clubs are already past that. Lose six instead and the ceiling is three or four, which no club has passed. So the door on a top eight place does not shut before the final matchday of the phase. The figure for first place is the same seven for the same 20 clubs, for the same reason. All 36 clubs still have a reachable rank range of first to 36th.

Matchday 2 is 18 fixtures split across two nights, nine on October 14 and nine on October 15. The October 14 half leans downward: 12 of the 18 clubs listed sit 18th or lower. Three of the nine put two matchday 1 losers together, with Inter Milan, joint 25th, hosting Club Brugge, joint 22nd, Villarreal in 21st hosting Napoli, joint 27th, and Sabah in 34th hosting Slavia Prague, joint 22nd and in the 24th place. RB Leipzig in 32nd host PSV Eindhoven, joint 19th, the only fixture that night involving one of the four clubs that drew. Four put a matchday 1 winner against a club still on zero: Galatasaray host Barcelona, Viking host Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, joint 25th, host Manchester United in fourth, and Arsenal host Lille. The ninth is the only winner against winner tie of the night, Lens, joint ninth, at home to Sporting CP, joint sixth. Six of the 16 winners play on October 14 and the other ten on October 15, which is where the top of the table sits: Manchester City in eighth host PSG in first, and Roma, joint 17th, host Real Madrid, joint 13th.

Two definitions. A clinch number is the smallest amount a club must still add for a place to be guaranteed even if every rival wins everything it has left. An elimination number is how many more defeats make a place impossible even if the club wins everything it has left. A blank means the arithmetic has not produced a figure. Ties are read cautiously in both directions: a rival who can only draw exactly level with you still blocks your clinch, and a rival level with you still cannot eliminate you. The calculation declines to call it either way on a tie, which is why a clinch marked here can trail an official announcement by a day.
