KBO playoff race 2026: Doosan's clinch number falls to 5, KIA's to 3 without playing; Friday's Doosan-Lotte game cancelled

Through games of Thursday, September 24. NC's 3-2 loss at KT lowered the line for fifth place, and Doosan and KIA each moved a win closer without playing: Doosan now needs 5 wins from its last 10 and KIA 3 from 13. Below the line, NC's tragic number is 5, Lotte's 3 and SSG's 2. Friday's Doosan-Lotte and SSG-Samsung games are cancelled, which leaves Hanwha at NC to decide whether Doosan's number drops to 4 or stays at 5.

Doosan and KIA each moved one win closer to a postseason place on Thursday, and neither of them played. Doosan's clinch number fell from 6 to 5 and KIA's from 4 to 3. Both drops came from one result, NC's 3-2 loss at KT. NC is the club that sets the line for fifth place, so a loss by NC lowers the bar for every club above it, whether or not that club was on the field.

Every figure here uses results through Thursday, September 24, when three games were played, all of them now final. Nothing from Friday is counted. The clinch numbers are worst-case figures that hand every rival a win in each game it has left, and the games-left counts assume a full 144-game season. None of this is a probability.

The mechanism is NC's ceiling, the record it finishes with if it wins every game it has left. A win leaves a ceiling where it was and a loss takes a win off it, so it can only move down. Before Thursday NC was 60-68-2 with 14 left, a ceiling of 74-68-2, or .521 with draws left out of the percentage. After the loss it is 60-69-2 with 13 left, and the ceiling is 73-69-2, .514. Doosan is 67-62-5 with 10 left, the same as on Wednesday night. Five wins make it 72-67-5, .518, above the new line. Four make it 71-68-5, .511, below it. Against the old line five wins fell short and six were needed. Doosan can now lose five of its last ten and still clinch on its own, one more loss than it could afford before Thursday.

KIA's number fell by the same route. KIA is also unchanged, 71-58-2 with 13 left. Three wins make it 74-68-2, .521, clear of NC's ceiling. Two wins make it 73-69-2, the exact record NC would reach by winning out, and finishing level does not count as clinching. KIA can now lose ten more times and still get there on its own, one more than before Thursday. Its reachable finish still runs from first to seventh. Doosan's runs from second to eighth.

At the top, KT beat NC to reach 80-48-4. Samsung won 5-4 at SSG and is 78-52-3. LG, already in, lost 6-4 at home to Lotte and is 75-56-1. All three have a place and none of them has first place settled. KT, Samsung and LG can each still finish first, and so can KIA. KT cannot finish lower than fourth, and Samsung and LG cannot finish lower than fifth.

Below the line, each chaser moved by its own result and nothing else. A floor is the record a club finishes with if it loses every game it has left, and it is the bar the chasers have to clear. KT and Samsung won on Thursday, so their floors rose, but both were already above every chaser's ceiling. Lotte won at LG and its tragic number stayed at 3. A win never raises a ceiling, so Lotte's is still 71-71-2, .500, and the floors that set its line, KIA's and Doosan's, did not move, because neither club played. That ceiling is still the same record as KIA's floor, 71-71-2, and a tie eliminates no one. SSG lost at home to Samsung and went from 3 to 2. NC's loss at KT took its own tragic number from 6 to 5. NC and Lotte can still reach fourth, and SSG fifth. Hanwha and Kiwoom are out.

SSG is now the closest to elimination, and the line its ceiling must not fall below is Doosan's floor. SSG is 58-71-5 with 10 left, so its ceiling is 68-71-5, .489. Doosan's floor is 67-72-5, .482. Both clubs have five draws, so wins can be compared directly. One more SSG loss brings its ceiling down to 67-72-5, matching Doosan's floor exactly. A dead heat knocks nobody out in this calculation, so SSG would still be alive. The second loss ends it. A Doosan win does the same work from the other side, because it lifts Doosan's floor by one win, so any two of SSG losses and Doosan wins, in any mix, finish SSG.

Update, September 26: NC beat Hanwha 8-7 in the Friday game this paragraph turns on, so the 'if NC wins' branch at its end is what happened, and no number moved: Doosan 5, KIA 3, NC 5. What each of Saturday's results would change is in the next update. Friday's schedule lost two of its three games. The schedule feed the site's tables are built from lists Lotte at Doosan and Samsung at SSG as cancelled and gives no reason. The previous update built its Friday scenarios around Doosan-Lotte, the only meeting on the schedule through Saturday between a club holding one of the two open places and a chaser, and that game is off. That leaves one game on Friday, Hanwha at NC, and it can still move the numbers, because NC's ceiling is the line. If Hanwha wins, NC's ceiling falls to 72-70-2, .507. Doosan's clinch number drops to 4, KIA's to 2 and NC's tragic number to 4, and Kiwoom is locked into tenth. KIA would need two wins rather than one because a single win would leave it at 72-70-2, level with NC's new ceiling. If NC wins, its ceiling stays at 73-69-2 and the numbers stay at Doosan 5, KIA 3 and NC 5. Lotte's 3 and SSG's 2 do not move either way. Once the game is final, the live tables on this site switch to whichever set of numbers applies.

After Friday, KIA hosts LG on Saturday and again on Sunday. Doosan's next game is Sunday at home to KT, Lotte hosts Hanwha on Sunday, and NC hosts Hanwha again on Saturday and Kiwoom on Sunday. SSG's next game on the published schedule is Tuesday, September 29, at home to LG. One caution about the schedule. The counts of games left include Friday's two cancelled games and any others still to be made up, and makeup dates have not been published. For every club but Kiwoom the schedule page lists fewer games than the count here, so the published fixtures are not everything that is left.

How to read these numbers. The figure used throughout this piece is the clinch number, and it counts wins: the fewest a club still needs for its place to be guaranteed while every rival wins all of its remaining games. It is the Clinch W column on the magic number page. The Magic column in the same table is a different count, own wins plus sixth-place losses and ties, so the two can differ. A tragic number counts losses the other way. Once it reaches zero, winning every remaining game would no longer be enough, and it can also shrink when a club above wins. Zero on either side means the question is closed. The two sides treat a dead heat differently. On the clinch side, a rival able to finish exactly level is still a threat, which is why KIA's number is three and not two, and why this site can confirm a place a day after the official word. On the elimination side, a club is out only when enough rivals are certain to finish above it, which is why SSG's next loss, by itself, would not end it. Head-to-head fixtures and the official tiebreak procedure are left out. The magic number page carries the whole table. The standings, the fixtures, the bracket and tie rules and the working behind every figure each have their own page, and any game still to be played can be set either way on the what-if page. Each club's answer is on its team page, Doosan, KIA, NC, Lotte, SSG.
