KBO playoff race 2026: NC's 8-7 win leaves every number in place; Saturday's Hanwha-NC and LG-KIA games decide what moves
Through games of Friday, September 25. NC beat Hanwha 8-7 in the only game played, the 'if NC wins' branch of our last update, and not one number moved. Doosan still needs 5 wins from its last 10 and KIA 3 from 13, and the tragic numbers are NC 5, Lotte 3 and SSG 2. We ran all eight win-loss combinations of Saturday's three games. A Hanwha win cuts Doosan to 4 and KIA to 2, or KIA to 1 if KIA also beats LG. An NC win leaves Doosan at 5. KIA could clinch as early as Sunday night.

Only one game was played on Friday, and it moved nothing. NC beat Hanwha 8-7 at home, while Lotte at Doosan and Samsung at SSG were cancelled. Our last update set out what a Hanwha win and an NC win would each do, and the one that happened is the NC win. Doosan's clinch number is still 5 and KIA's 3, and the tragic numbers are still NC 5, Lotte 3 and SSG 2, exactly as on Thursday night. Not one club's range of reachable finishes changed either.
Every figure here uses results through Friday, September 25. Nothing from Saturday is counted. The figures for Saturday and Sunday results come from feeding hypothetical results into the same engine that builds the tables on this site. Clinch numbers are worst-case figures that hand every rival a win in each game it has left, and the games-left counts assume a full 144-game season. None of this is a probability.
The numbers held because the line is NC's ceiling, the record it finishes with if it wins every game it has left, and an NC win is already built into it. A win leaves the ceiling where it was and a loss takes a win off it. Before Friday NC was 60-69-2 with 13 left, a ceiling of 73-69-2, or .514 with draws left out of the percentage. After the win it is 61-69-2 with 12 left, and the ceiling is still 73-69-2. Doosan (67-62-5, 10 left) still clears it with five wins, at 72-67-5 (.518), and falls short with four, at 71-68-5 (.511). KIA (71-58-2, 13 left) clears it with three, at 74-68-2 (.521). NC's own tragic number stays at 5 for the same reason: it is set by NC's ceiling and the floors of the clubs above, and neither moved. Hanwha, the losing side, was already out.
Saturday has three games: Hanwha at NC, LG at KIA and Kiwoom at KT. Hanwha-NC is again the one that moves the most. Taken on its own, a Hanwha win drops NC's ceiling to 72-70-2 (.507). Doosan's clinch number falls to 4, KIA's to 2 and NC's tragic number to 4, the numbers Friday's Hanwha-win branch would have produced, a day late. An NC win moves nothing. A draw lands in between. NC's ceiling falls to 72-69-3 (.5106), so Doosan goes to 4 and KIA to 2 as with a Hanwha win, but a draw is not a loss and NC's tragic number stays at 5. Doosan's four-win record, 71-68-5 (.5108), clears that line in the fourth decimal place.
LG-KIA moves only KIA's own number. A KIA win takes it from 3 to 2. A KIA loss leaves it at 3, because one fewer game remains and three wins still reach 74-68-2. The result does not touch Doosan's number or any chaser's tragic number. It does move two ranges. KIA's floor, 71-71-2, is exactly Lotte's ceiling. A KIA win lifts that floor to 72-70-2 (.507), so the two can no longer finish level: KIA's reachable finish narrows from first-to-seventh to first-to-sixth, and Lotte's best possible finish drops from fourth to fifth. A draw does the same to both ranges and also cuts KIA's clinch number to 2, though the Magic column on the magic number page stays at 3 after a draw.
Kiwoom-KT has nothing to do with the top five. What it touches is the bottom of the table. Kiwoom's ceiling, 54-86-4, is exactly Hanwha's floor, 54-86-4, so Kiwoom can still finish ninth. A KT win or a draw lowers Kiwoom's ceiling, and a Hanwha win or a draw at NC raises Hanwha's floor, and either one locks Kiwoom into tenth. Kiwoom keeps a path to ninth past Saturday only if NC beats Hanwha and Kiwoom beats KT. KT finishes somewhere from first to fourth whatever happens in this game.
Update, September 27: Saturday's three games ended with NC beating Hanwha 3-2, KIA beating LG 5-1 and Kiwoom winning 10-1 at KT. That is the 'NC and KIA win' branch in this paragraph, and feeding the actual results into the engine behind the site's tables gives exactly the numbers written here: Doosan 5, KIA 2, NC 5, Lotte 3 and SSG 2, with nobody clinched or eliminated. As set out above, KIA's reachable finish narrowed to first-to-sixth and Lotte's best possible finish dropped to fifth, and with NC and Kiwoom both winning, Kiwoom kept its path to ninth. The next update sets out what each result of Sunday's four games and Tuesday's five would change. Split by wins and losses only, the three games make eight combinations, and because Kiwoom-KT never moves a playoff-race number they pair off into four outcomes. NC and LG both win: Doosan 5, KIA 3, NC 5, the numbers as they stood on Friday night. NC and KIA win: Doosan 5, KIA 2, NC 5. Hanwha and LG win: Doosan 4, KIA 2, NC 4. Hanwha and KIA both win: Doosan 4, KIA 1, NC 4. KIA's floor of 72-70-2 would then equal NC's new ceiling, so one more KIA win would settle it. In all eight Lotte stays at 3 and SSG at 2, and no combination clinches or eliminates anyone on Saturday. The same holds in the other 19 combinations, the ones that include a draw.
Sunday has four games: Hanwha at Lotte, KT at Doosan, LG at KIA and Kiwoom at NC. Taken one at a time, with the other Sunday games still to be played, a Sunday game that ends in a win moves the same numbers whatever happens on Saturday. A Doosan win over KT cuts Doosan's clinch number by one and NC's, Lotte's and SSG's tragic numbers by one each, because Doosan's floor is the line the chasers have to clear. A KT win leaves those four clubs where they are. A Lotte loss to Hanwha cuts Lotte's tragic number by one. An NC loss to Kiwoom repeats the effect of a Saturday loss to Hanwha, one off Doosan's and KIA's clinch numbers and one off NC's tragic number. A KIA win over LG cuts KIA's number by one. Draws need their own count. A Hanwha-Lotte draw on its own leaves every clinch and tragic number where it is, whatever happens on Saturday. If KT-Doosan is drawn as well, though, the Hanwha-Lotte draw takes one off Lotte's tragic number. For the other three, as long as Saturday's Hanwha-NC and LG-KIA games both produce a winner, a draw moves the same numbers whoever won them. A KT-Doosan draw takes one off Doosan's clinch number and one off SSG's tragic number, an LG-KIA draw takes one off KIA's clinch number, and a Kiwoom-NC draw takes one off both Doosan's and KIA's clinch numbers. If either of those two Saturday games is drawn, these effects can change. The same goes once more than one Sunday game is in: every effect here, win or draw, is what that one game does on its own.
Counting every Saturday and Sunday result together, KIA could clinch as early as Sunday night. If none of these games is drawn, KIA is in by Sunday night when three of four things happen: KIA wins on Saturday, KIA wins on Sunday, NC loses on Saturday, NC loses on Sunday. Draws break that count. Once a drawn game is final, the tables on the magic number page switch to numbers that include it. Doosan cannot clinch this weekend: two NC losses and a Doosan win over KT would still leave it needing two. Nobody can be eliminated by Sunday night either. At the most the tragic numbers fall to NC 2, Lotte 1 and SSG 1. SSG does not play again until Tuesday, September 29, at home to LG. The games-left counts include games still waiting for a date, such as Friday's two cancellations, so for every club but Kiwoom the schedule page lists fewer games than the count here.
At the top, KT (80-48-4) leads but nothing is settled. KT, Samsung, LG and KIA can all still finish first. KT's range runs from first to fourth, and Samsung's and LG's from first to fifth. No Saturday result takes any of the four out of the first-place picture. Sunday can take KIA out. KIA's ceiling is 84-58-2 (.592) and KT's floor is 80-60-4 (.571). If no game is drawn, a single KIA loss this weekend together with KT wins over both Kiwoom and Doosan, or two KIA losses together with any KT win, would drop KIA's ceiling below KT's floor, and KIA could no longer finish first. KT, Samsung and LG keep a path to first place whatever happens this weekend.
How to read these numbers. The figure used throughout this piece is the clinch number, and it counts wins: the fewest a club still needs for its place to be guaranteed while every rival wins all of its remaining games. It is the Clinch W column on the magic number page. The Magic column in the same table is a different count, own wins plus sixth-place losses and ties, so the two can differ. A tragic number counts losses the other way. Once it reaches zero, winning every remaining game would no longer be enough, and it can also shrink when a club above wins. The two sides treat a dead heat differently. On the clinch side, a rival able to finish exactly level is still a threat, which is why KIA would still need one more win even after Hanwha and KIA both win on Saturday. On the elimination side, a club is out only when enough rivals are certain to finish above it. Reachable finishes follow the same rule: a club that can only draw level is not counted above you when finding your best finish, and is counted above you when finding your worst. That is why Kiwoom can still finish ninth. Head-to-head fixtures and the official tiebreak procedure are left out. The magic number page carries the whole table. The standings, the fixtures, the bracket and tie rules and the working behind every figure each have their own page, and any game still to be played can be set on the what-if page. Each club's answer is on its team page, Doosan, KIA, NC, Lotte, SSG, KT.
