KBO playoff race 2026: KIA's 5-1 win over LG cuts its clinch number to 2; a KIA win and an NC loss on Sunday would put it in; Doosan holds at 5
Through games of Saturday, September 26. KIA beat LG 5-1 and its clinch number fell from 3 to 2. NC beat Hanwha 3-2 and Kiwoom won 10-1 at KT, the 'NC and KIA win' branch of our last update, so Doosan stays at 5 and the tragic numbers stay at NC 5, Lotte 3 and SSG 2. We ran all 16 win-loss combinations of Sunday's four games. A KIA win and an NC loss put KIA in, and a Doosan win over KT together with a Kiwoom win at NC cuts Doosan to 3. The first eliminations could come on Tuesday, September 29.

Of Saturday's three games, only KIA's win moved a number. KIA beat LG 5-1 at home, and its clinch number fell from 3 to 2. NC beat Hanwha 3-2 at home, and Kiwoom won 10-1 at KT. Our last update set out all eight win-loss combinations of the three games, and the one that happened is NC and KIA both winning. The numbers are the ones it gave for that branch: Doosan 5, KIA 2 and NC 5, with Lotte still at 3 and SSG at 2, and nobody clinched or eliminated. Feeding the actual results into the engine that builds this site's tables gives the same figures.
Every figure here uses results through Saturday, September 26, when three games were played, all of them now final. Nothing from Sunday is counted. The figures for Sunday and Tuesday results come from feeding hypothetical results into the same engine. Clinch numbers are worst-case figures that hand every rival a win in each game it has left, and the games-left counts assume a full 144-game season. None of this is a probability.
KIA's number fell because KIA won. The line is still NC's ceiling, 73-69-2, or .514 with draws left out of the percentage. KIA is 72-58-2 with 12 left. Two wins make it 74-68-2 (.521), clear of that line. One win makes it 73-69-2, the exact record NC would reach by winning out, and finishing level does not count as clinching. The same win lifted KIA's floor to 72-70-2 (.507), above Lotte's ceiling of 71-71-2 (.500), so the two can no longer finish level: KIA's reachable finish narrowed from first-to-seventh to first-to-sixth, and Lotte's best possible finish dropped from fourth to fifth. KIA's figure in the Magic column on the magic number page also went from 3 to 2.
Nothing else moved. NC's win again left NC's ceiling where it was, because a ceiling already counts every remaining game as a win. NC went from 61-69-2 with 12 left to 62-69-2 with 11 left, and the ceiling is still 73-69-2. So Doosan (67-62-5, 10 left), which did not play, still clears it with five wins, at 72-67-5 (.518), and falls short with four, at 71-68-5 (.511). The tragic numbers held too, NC 5, Lotte 3 and SSG 2. They are set by each chaser's ceiling and by the floor of Doosan in fifth, and the chasers either won or sat out while Doosan sat out. Hanwha, the losing side at NC, was already out.
Kiwoom-KT moved nothing either. KT lost 10-1 at home but is still first at 80-49-4, and its reachable finish is still first to fourth. A floor already counts every remaining game as a loss, so KT's floor is 80-60-4 (.571) before and after the defeat. What fell is its ceiling, from 92-48-4 to 91-49-4. Kiwoom's win kept its path to ninth. Its ceiling, 54-86-4, is exactly Hanwha's floor, and a club that can only draw level is not counted above you when finding your best finish. Our last update said that path would survive Saturday only if NC and Kiwoom both won, and they did.
Sunday has four games: Hanwha at Lotte, KT at Doosan, LG at KIA and Kiwoom at NC. Taken one at a time, with the other Sunday games still to be played, this is what each does. A Doosan win over KT cuts Doosan's clinch number from 5 to 4 and the tragic numbers to NC 4, Lotte 2 and SSG 1, because Doosan's floor is the line the chasers have to clear. A KT win leaves those four numbers alone. It does drop Doosan's ceiling from 77-62-5 (.554) to 76-63-5 (.547), below Samsung's floor of 78-63-3 (.553), so Samsung's reachable finish narrows from first-to-fifth to first-to-fourth and Doosan's best possible finish drops from second to third. A Kiwoom win at NC drops NC's ceiling to 72-70-2 (.507): Doosan goes to 4, KIA to 1 and NC's tragic number to 4. An NC win leaves those numbers alone and locks Kiwoom into tenth. A KIA win over LG takes KIA to 1, and an LG win moves nothing. A Lotte loss to Hanwha cuts Lotte's tragic number to 2 and also locks Kiwoom into tenth. A Lotte win moves nothing.
Draws need their own count. A KT-Doosan draw cuts Doosan to 4 and SSG to 1, leaves NC and Lotte where they are, and moves Samsung's and Doosan's ranges the way a KT win does. A Kiwoom-NC draw cuts Doosan to 4 and KIA to 1, as an NC loss would, but a draw is not a loss and NC's tragic number stays at 5. It also locks Kiwoom into tenth. An LG-KIA draw cuts KIA's clinch number to 1, though the Magic column stays at 2. A Hanwha-Lotte draw on its own moves no clinch or tragic number and only locks Kiwoom into tenth. Two draws together can count differently. If KT-Doosan and Kiwoom-NC are both drawn, Doosan goes to 4, not 3, and two draws that leave NC alone one at a time together cut its tragic number to 4. If Hanwha-Lotte and KT-Doosan are both drawn, Lotte goes to 2.
Update, September 28: On Sunday KT won 12-6 at Doosan, Kiwoom won 8-4 at NC and Hanwha won 6-2 at Lotte. LG at KIA was not played: the schedule data behind this site's tables lists it as cancelled, with no reason given. The three games moved the numbers exactly as set out above, and feeding the actual results into the engine behind the site's tables gives the three added together: Doosan 4, KIA 1, NC 4, Lotte 2 and SSG 2, with nobody clinched or eliminated. KIA's Sunday clinch, described below, needed a KIA win or draw against LG; with the game not played it did not happen, and KIA still needs one win. The Tuesday and first-place paragraphs below match the engine once LG at KIA is treated as unplayed. The next update sets out what each result on Tuesday and Wednesday would change. Split by wins and losses only, the four games make 16 combinations, and in all 16 the clinch and tragic numbers are exactly the single-game changes above added together. The biggest swing is a Doosan win over KT together with a Kiwoom win at NC: Doosan 3, NC 3 and SSG 1, with Lotte at 2 or 1 depending on its game with Hanwha. If KT and NC both win, Doosan stays at 5. None of the 16 clinches Doosan or eliminates anyone, and at the most the tragic numbers fall to NC 3, Lotte 1 and SSG 1. Adding the other 65 combinations, the ones with a draw, changes neither point: KIA is the only club that can clinch on Sunday, and nobody can be eliminated.
KIA can clinch on Sunday night. A KIA win over LG and an NC loss to Kiwoom put it in: the win lifts KIA's floor to 73-69-2 (.514), and the loss drops NC's ceiling to 72-70-2 (.507), below it. The other two games do not matter. Draws can do it too. A KIA win with an NC draw, or a KIA draw with an NC loss, also puts KIA in. If KIA and NC both draw, KIA's floor and NC's ceiling meet at 72-69-3 and KIA still needs one. If KIA and NC both win, KIA's floor of 73-69-2 equals NC's ceiling exactly, and again one win is left. Once KIA is in, its reachable finish narrows to first-to-fifth and NC's best possible finish drops from fourth to fifth.
Tuesday, September 29, has five games: Hanwha at Samsung, KT at KIA, LG at SSG, NC at Doosan and Kiwoom at Lotte. We ran every result of Sunday's four games and Tuesday's five together, draws included, 19,683 combinations in all. If none is drawn, KIA is in by Tuesday night when two of four things happen: KIA beats LG on Sunday, KIA beats KT on Tuesday, NC loses to Kiwoom on Sunday, NC loses to Doosan on Tuesday. Draws break that count, but even then KIA's clinch turns only on KIA's and NC's games. Doosan cannot clinch by Tuesday night in any combination. Its number can fall as low as 1, and without draws it gets there only if Doosan beats both KT and NC and NC also loses to Kiwoom. Eliminations can begin on Tuesday. Without draws, SSG is out when two of three things happen: Doosan beats KT, Doosan beats NC, LG beats SSG. Lotte is out when three of four happen: Lotte loses to Hanwha on Sunday, Lotte loses to Kiwoom on Tuesday, Doosan beats KT, Doosan beats NC. NC cannot be eliminated by Tuesday night. SSG has no game on Sunday. The games-left counts include games still waiting for a date, so for every club but Kiwoom the schedule page lists fewer games than the count here.
At the top, KT (80-49-4) leads but nothing is settled. KT, Samsung, LG and KIA can all still finish first: KT anywhere from first to fourth, Samsung and LG from first to fifth, KIA from first to sixth. No Sunday result takes any of the four out of the first-place picture. Tuesday's KT-KIA game can take KIA out. KIA's ceiling is 84-58-2 (.592) and KT's floor is 80-60-4 (.571). If no game is drawn, a KT win over KIA on Tuesday, together with either a KIA loss to LG or a KT win at Doosan on Sunday, drops KIA's ceiling below KT's floor, and KIA could no longer finish first. KT, Samsung and LG keep a path to first place whatever happens through Tuesday, and no combination settles first place by Tuesday night.
How to read these numbers. The figure used throughout this piece is the clinch number, and it counts wins: the fewest a club still needs for its place to be guaranteed while every rival wins all of its remaining games. It is the Clinch W column on the magic number page. The Magic column in the same table is a different count, own wins plus sixth-place losses and ties, so the two can differ. A tragic number counts losses the other way. Once it reaches zero, winning every remaining game would no longer be enough, and it can also shrink when a club above wins. The two sides treat a dead heat differently. On the clinch side, a rival able to finish exactly level is still a threat, which is why KIA would still need one more win even if KIA and NC both win on Sunday. On the elimination side, a club is out only when enough rivals are certain to finish above it, which is why SSG's next loss, by itself, would not end it. Reachable finishes follow the same rule: a club that can only draw level is not counted above you when finding your best finish, and is counted above you when finding your worst. That is why Kiwoom can still finish ninth. Head-to-head fixtures and the official tiebreak procedure are left out. The magic number page carries the whole table. The standings, the fixtures, the bracket and tie rules and the working behind every figure each have their own page, and the what-if page lets you set any game still to be played. Each club's answer is on its team page, Doosan, KIA, NC, Lotte, SSG, KT.
