KBO playoff race 2026: KIA clinches despite losing to KT as Doosan beats NC 5-2 and cuts its clinch number to 2; one more Doosan win over NC on Wednesday would settle the top five

Through games of Tuesday, September 29. Doosan beat NC 5-2, dropping NC's ceiling below KIA's floor, so KIA clinched a place although it lost 8-5 to KT. The same win cut Doosan's clinch number from 4 to 2, NC's tragic number from 4 to 2, and Lotte's and SSG's from 2 to 1. KT's win means KIA can no longer finish first. We ran every result of Wednesday's five games, and of the nine games on Wednesday and Thursday, October 1, draws included. One more Doosan win over NC on Wednesday settles all five places that night, and by Thursday night one win in the two games, or two draws, is enough.

Of Tuesday's five games, only Doosan's win moved a playoff-race number, and it put KIA in. Doosan beat NC 5-2 at home. KIA lost 8-5 at home to KT the same night, but once Doosan had won, KIA's own result no longer mattered. The same win cut Doosan's clinch number from 4 to 2, NC's tragic number from 4 to 2, and Lotte's and SSG's tragic numbers from 2 to 1. Lotte beat Kiwoom 4-2, SSG beat LG 7-1 and Samsung beat Hanwha 10-5, all three at home. Our last update set out what each Tuesday game would change on its own, and the five games did exactly what it said. Feeding the actual results into the engine that builds this site's tables gives clinch and tragic numbers that are the five single-game changes added together. KIA clinched, and nobody was eliminated.

Every figure here uses results through Tuesday, September 29, when all five scheduled games were played, all of them now final. The figures for Wednesday and Thursday results come from feeding hypothetical results into the same engine. Clinch numbers are worst-case figures that hand every rival a win in each game it has left, and the games-left counts assume a full 144-game season. None of this is a probability.

KIA clinched on a night it lost because the line it had to clear was NC's ceiling, the record NC finishes with if it wins every game it has left. NC was 62-70-2 with 10 left, a ceiling of 72-70-2, or .507 with draws left out of the percentage. KIA's floor, the record it finishes with if it loses every game it has left, was also 72-70-2 (.507), exactly level, and finishing level does not count as clinching, so KIA still needed one win. The loss to Doosan left NC 62-71-2 with 9 left and dropped its ceiling to 71-71-2 (.500). KIA lost to KT and is 72-59-2 with 11 left, but its floor is still 72-70-2 (.507), because a floor already counts every remaining game as a loss. NC can no longer reach KIA's floor even by winning out, and neither can Lotte, whose ceiling is 70-72-2 (.493), or SSG, at 68-71-5 (.489). Only KT, Samsung, LG and Doosan can still finish ahead of KIA, so KIA is in the top five. In the Magic column on the magic number page, KIA went from 1 to clinched.

KT's win took KIA out of the first-place picture. KIA's ceiling fell from 84-58-2 (.592) to 83-59-2 (.585), below KT's new floor of 82-58-4 (.586). KIA's reachable finish narrowed from first-to-sixth to second-to-fifth: clinching removed sixth, and KT's win removed first. KT is 82-49-4, and its reachable finish narrowed from first-to-fourth to first-to-third, because KIA can no longer catch it. Samsung beat Hanwha to reach 79-52-3, and its floor rose to 79-62-3 (.560). LG lost to SSG and is 75-58-1. Its ceiling fell from 86-57-1 (.601) to 85-58-1 (.594), still above KT's floor, so LG can still finish first. Samsung can finish anywhere from first to fourth and LG from first to fifth, as before.

Doosan's number fell by two because the win came head to head. Doosan is 68-63-5 with 8 left, and its floor rose from 67-72-5 (.482) to 68-71-5 (.489). The same game dropped NC's ceiling to 71-71-2 (.500). Doosan now clears that line with two more wins, at 70-69-5 (.504), and falls short with one, at 69-70-5 (.496). A win over NC is different. It drops NC's ceiling again, to 70-72-2 (.493), and 69-70-5 sits above that. That is why one more Doosan win over NC puts Doosan in at once. NC's tragic number fell from 4 to 2 in the same game. In the Magic column, Doosan went from 6 to 4.

Lotte and SSG won and still saw their tragic numbers fall to 1. A chaser's tragic number is set by its own ceiling and by the floor of Doosan in fifth. Lotte (60-72-2, 10 left) and SSG (59-71-5, 9 left) did not move their ceilings by winning, because a ceiling already counts every remaining game as a win. What moved was Doosan's floor. Lotte's ceiling of 70-72-2 (.493) is now just above Doosan's new floor of 68-71-5 (.489), and SSG's ceiling of 68-71-5 is exactly Doosan's floor. On the elimination side a club is out only when enough rivals are certain to finish above it, so SSG, which can still finish level with Doosan, is not out yet. One more Lotte loss would drop its ceiling to 69-73-2 (.486), and one more SSG loss would drop SSG's to 67-72-5 (.482), below Doosan's floor either way.

On Wednesday, September 30, the same five pairs meet again with the same home sides: Hanwha at Samsung, KT at KIA, LG at SSG, NC at Doosan and Kiwoom at Lotte. Taken one at a time, with the other games still to be played, NC at Doosan again carries the most. A Doosan win settles all five places on its own. Doosan would be 69-63-5, and its floor of 69-70-5 (.496) would clear NC's new ceiling of 70-72-2 (.493), Lotte's ceiling of 70-72-2 (.493) and SSG's of 68-71-5 (.489). Doosan would be in, NC, Lotte and SSG out, and Doosan's reachable finish would narrow to third-to-fifth. An NC win moves nothing: Doosan's floor already counts the loss, and NC's ceiling already counts the win. A draw cuts Doosan to 1 and NC to 1, and lifts Doosan's floor to 68-70-6 (.4928), which ends SSG's season. Lotte survives that draw. Its ceiling of 70-72-2 (.4930) stays a fraction above Doosan's floor, a gap that only shows in the fourth decimal place.

LG at SSG moves only SSG's number. An LG win or a draw puts SSG out, and an SSG win leaves it at 1. Kiwoom at Lotte moves only Lotte's. A Kiwoom win drops Lotte's ceiling to 69-73-2 (.486) and puts it out, and a Lotte win leaves it at 1. A draw does not end Lotte's season on its own: its ceiling of 69-72-3 (.4894) would stay above Doosan's floor of 68-71-5 (.4892), again in the fourth decimal place. Either elimination, on its own, would lift Doosan's worst possible finish from eighth to seventh. KT at KIA and Hanwha at Samsung, taken on their own, change no clinch or tragic number and no reachable finish.

Update, October 1: On Wednesday Doosan beat NC 6-5, Samsung beat Hanwha 6-2, KT won 3-2 at KIA, SSG beat LG 4-3 and Lotte beat Kiwoom 8-6. As this piece said, Doosan's win alone settled all five places. Doosan clinched, and NC went out along with Lotte and SSG, both of which won. Doosan's reachable finish is now third to fifth. LG's loss to SSG together with KT's win at KIA means LG can no longer finish first, and KT's worst possible finish is now second, also as set out here. With all five places settled on Wednesday night, the branches below through Thursday, October 1, are no longer needed. The race for first place and Wild Card home field is in the next update. We ran every result of Wednesday's five games, draws included, 243 combinations in all. Doosan's clinch, NC's elimination and the settling of every club's playoff fate all turn on the same single condition, a Doosan win over NC, which covers 81 of the 243. Doosan's clinch number and NC's tragic number turn on that game alone: a Doosan win takes both to 0, a draw to 1, and an NC win leaves both at 2. SSG is out on Wednesday night in every combination except an SSG win over LG together with an NC win over Doosan, 216 of the 243, and if it survives its tragic number stays at 1. Lotte is out if Doosan beats NC or Kiwoom beats Lotte. Draws add one more way. If NC-Doosan and Kiwoom-Lotte are both drawn, Doosan's floor of 68-70-6 (.4928) rises above Lotte's ceiling of 69-72-3 (.4894), so two draws that leave Lotte alive one at a time together end its season. Lotte is out in 162 of the 243, and if it survives its tragic number is 1. If NC, Lotte and SSG all win, every clinch and tragic number on Wednesday night is where it is now.

Thursday, October 1, has four games: Hanwha at Samsung, KT at KIA, LG at SSG and NC at Doosan. Kiwoom and Lotte do not play. We ran all nine games of the two days together, draws included, 19,683 combinations. Doosan is in by Thursday night if it beats NC once in the two games, or draws both, 13,122 of the 19,683. Once Doosan is in, NC, Lotte and SSG are all out, and no other combination settles all five places. If NC wins both, Doosan and NC both stay at 2, and an NC win and a draw leave both at 1. Doosan's clinch number and NC's tragic number turn on those two games alone. SSG gets past Thursday night only if it beats LG twice and NC beats Doosan twice, 243 combinations. If no game is drawn, Lotte survives only if it beats Kiwoom and NC beats Doosan twice. Draws add two more ways: with two NC wins, a Lotte draw with Kiwoom is enough, and with a Lotte win, an NC win and a draw against Doosan are enough. Lotte or SSG, if still alive, would have a tragic number of 1. The games-left counts include games still waiting for a date, so for every club but Kiwoom the schedule page lists fewer games than the count here. KIA has 11 left and 7 of them are on the schedule, and the schedule data still does not show when the LG-KIA game cancelled on September 27 will be made up.

At the top, KT (82-49-4) leads, but no combination settles first place by Thursday night, and KT and Samsung keep a path to first whatever happens. KT's floor is 82-58-4 (.586), Samsung's ceiling 89-52-3 (.631) and LG's ceiling 85-58-1 (.594). LG can drop out on Wednesday: an LG loss to SSG with a KT win or draw at KIA, or an LG-SSG draw with a KT win, leaves LG unable to finish first. An LG loss and a KT win, for instance, drop LG's ceiling to 84-59-1 (.587), below KT's floor of 83-57-4 (.593). Through Thursday, if no game is drawn, LG is out of the running for first once its losses to SSG and KT's wins at KIA add up to two. A draw cuts into LG's ceiling too. A win and a draw against SSG, with KT and KIA splitting their two games, leave LG at 84-58-2 (.592) at best, below KT's floor of 83-57-4 (.593). If LG drops out, KT's worst possible finish improves from third to second. KIA can no longer finish first and cannot finish below fifth.

How to read these numbers. The figure used throughout this piece is the clinch number, and it counts wins: the fewest a club still needs for its place to be guaranteed while every rival wins all of its remaining games. It is the Clinch W column on the magic number page. The Magic column in the same table is a different count, own wins plus sixth-place losses and ties, so the two can differ: Doosan's clinch number is 2 and its Magic figure is 4. A tragic number counts losses the other way. Once it reaches zero, winning every remaining game would no longer be enough, and it can also shrink when a club above wins, which is why Lotte and SSG won on Tuesday and still went to 1. The two sides treat a dead heat differently. On the clinch side, a rival able to finish exactly level is still a threat, which is why KIA still needed one win on the night of September 27, when its floor equalled NC's ceiling. On the elimination side, a club is out only when enough rivals are certain to finish above it, which is why SSG is not out although its ceiling of 68-71-5 equals Doosan's floor. Reachable finishes follow the same rule: a club that can only draw level is not counted above you when finding your best finish, and is counted above you when finding your worst. That is why SSG can still finish as high as fifth and Doosan as low as eighth. Head-to-head fixtures and the official tiebreak procedure are left out. The magic number page carries the whole table. The standings, the fixtures, the bracket and tie rules and the working behind every figure each have their own page, and the what-if page lets you set any game still to be played. Each club's answer is on its team page, Doosan, KIA, NC, Lotte, SSG, KT, LG, Samsung.
