The playoff picture in numbers - what the seeds mean this week, and what the arithmetic can already rule out.
Fri, Oct 30
NFL playoff picture after Week 7: 13 clubs now hold a clinch number, Cleveland, Denver and Pittsburgh gain one at 5-2, Green Bay loses its number, Minnesota is the last unbeaten club, and nobody can clinch in Week 8
After Week 7: Kansas City and San Francisco lost for the first time, so Minnesota at 6-0 is the only unbeaten club left. Thirteen clubs hold a clinch number, up from ten, because Cleveland, Denver and Pittsburgh at 5-2 and Cincinnati at 4-2 picked one up in the AFC while Green Bay at 4-3 lost its number in the NFC. Minnesota and Jacksonville can lose twice and still clinch on their own, and four more clubs can afford one loss. The smallest number anywhere is 9, the smallest tragic number is 7, and Week 8 cannot put a zero anywhere.

NFL playoff picture after Week 6: the 49ers and Vikings can afford two losses, 4-2 brings a clinch number in the NFC but not the AFC, and nobody can clinch in Week 7
After Week 6: San Francisco at 6-0, Kansas City and Minnesota at 5-0, and Buffalo at 5-1. San Francisco needs 9 more wins with 11 left and Minnesota 10 with 12 left, so for the first time this season two clubs can lose twice and still clinch on their own. Six clubs can afford a loss, up from five, and ten have a clinch number, up from eight. Every NFC club at 4-2 has one; no AFC club at 4-2 does.

NFL playoff picture after Week 5: five teams can afford a loss, the Giants' tie was worth a game, and nobody can clinch in Week 6
After Week 5: two clubs at 5-0, Kansas City at 4-0 after its bye, three at 4-1 and the Giants at 3-1-1 after the season's first tie. NFL playoff picture after Week 3: Buffalo can now afford a loss, and only 6 teams can clinch by winning out
After Week 3, with all 32 clubs through three games: five at 3-0, eleven at 2-1, eleven at 1-2, five at 0-3. Buffalo's clinch number is 13 with 14 games left, the first clinch number this season smaller than a club's remaining schedule. NFL playoff picture after Week 2: only 9 teams can clinch by winning out, and what the math leaves 0-2 teams
After Week 2, with all 32 clubs through two games: eight at 2-0, sixteen at 1-1, eight at 0-2. Nine clubs, 1-1 Jacksonville among them, can guarantee a place by winning all 15 games they have left. The other 23 cannot guarantee anything on their own results, and for all 23 the elimination line today is a 1-16 season.

Buffalo Bills 2-0 in 2026: why even a 17-0 finish would not guarantee an AFC playoff place
Through games of Friday, September 18. Buffalo is the only club in football with two wins, fourth in the AFC on our table and first under the league's seeding rules. Win all 15 games it has left, with every rival also winning out, and the Bills still finish eighth in the conference and miss the seven-team field.

NFL winless teams 2026: point margins and tragic numbers for all 16 clubs
