KBO standings race 2026: KT is two away from first after a 2-2 draw with Lotte and Doosan's 12-0 rout of Samsung, and KIA beats LG to move into third
Through games of Sunday, October 4. KT drew 2-2 with Lotte and Doosan beat Samsung 12-0, so if no game is drawn, KT clinches first once its wins and Samsung's losses add up to 2, and the earliest it can happen is Monday, October 5. Samsung now needs help from KT's results even if it wins all 6 games it has left. KIA beat LG 6-5 to move into third in the standings, but LG, KIA and Doosan can each still finish anywhere from third to fifth. We ran every result of Monday's five games, and of the ten games through Tuesday, October 6, draws included.
Clinch Desk · Sun, Oct 4
On Sunday, October 4, Lotte and KT drew 2-2, and Doosan beat Samsung 12-0. KIA won 6-5 at LG. SSG won 6-2 at NC, and Kiwoom won 9-3 at Hanwha. No place was settled. Every club's reachable finish is the same as the day before: KT and Samsung first or second, LG, KIA and Doosan third to fifth, NC, SSG and Lotte sixth to eighth, Hanwha ninth and Kiwoom tenth. What moved were the counts. Our last update said a Lotte-KT draw would leave KT's count where a KT win would, and that with a Samsung loss on top it would fall from 4 to 2, and that is what happened. In the standings KIA (74-61-2, .548) moved past LG (75-62-1, .547) into third.
Every figure here uses results through Sunday, October 4, when all five scheduled games were played, all of them now final. The figures for Monday and Tuesday results come from feeding hypothetical results into the engine that builds this site's tables. A reachable finish is a boundary set by two records, the one a club finishes with if it wins every game it has left (its ceiling) and the one it finishes with if it loses them all (its floor), and the games-left counts assume a full 144-game season. Draws are left out of the winning percentage. None of this is a probability.
Each place leads somewhere different. Under the format on the postseason page, first place goes straight to the Korean Series (best of seven), second waits in the Playoff (best of five) and third in the Semi-Playoff (best of five). Fourth and fifth start in the Wild Card round: up to 2 games, all at the fourth seed's park, where fourth starts with a one-win head start and advances by winning once, while fifth must win twice. So KT's and Samsung's games left decide first place, and LG's, KIA's and Doosan's decide third, which skips the Wild Card round, and fourth, which hosts it.
First place is between KT (85-49-5, 5 games left) and Samsung (82-53-3, 6 left). If no game is drawn, KT clinches first the moment its wins and Samsung's losses add up to 2. Two more wins in KT's last 5 would lift its floor to 87-52-5 (.626), above Samsung's ceiling of 88-53-3 (.624), while one would leave it at 86-53-5 (.619), short. The team page shows the same number: two wins clinch first for KT whatever else happens. One Samsung loss lowers that ceiling to 87-54-3 (.617) and takes one win off what KT needs. The two meet three more times, on Wednesday, October 7, at KT's park and on Sunday, October 11, and Monday, October 12, at Samsung's. A game between the two counts on both sides, as a win for one and a loss for the other, so a single KT win over Samsung makes the 2 by itself. Whichever of the three meetings it comes in, and whatever has happened before, a KT win over Samsung clinches first on the spot. A draw also closes the gap, but by less than a win or a loss.
Samsung, the other way, needs its wins and KT's losses to add up to 10 if no game is drawn. That count was also 10 before Sunday, and winning all 7 of its games left would have reached it exactly, because three of them are against KT and add three KT losses: winning out meant first place. After the 12-0 loss to Doosan, Samsung has 6 left, and winning them all now stops at 6 plus KT's three losses, 9. That is why the team page and the magic number page show Samsung as unable to clinch first on its own. If Samsung wins all 6, it finishes first unless KT wins both of its other games, against Lotte on Monday and at Kiwoom on Tuesday, October 6; a KT loss or draw in either is enough. If KT wins both of those, KT finishes 87-52-5 (.626), above Samsung's 88-53-3 (.624).
The two can also finish level. If KT goes 1-4-0 in its last 5 and Samsung 4-0-2 in its last 6, both finish 86-53-5, a result the remaining schedule allows. A two-team tie for first is decided by a one-game tiebreaker under the KBO rules, hosted, as the postseason page says, by the club with the better head-to-head record. Samsung leads the season series 9-4, so even if KT wins all three remaining meetings it trails 7-9. This site's engine does not count first place as clinched while the two can still finish level, and the 2 above is the count at which Samsung can no longer even draw level with KT. A two-team tie anywhere from third to fifth is decided without an extra game, by head-to-head wins, then head-to-head runs, then the previous season's finish. A three-way tie follows the tie rules on the postseason page. The engine does not work out head-to-head order.
Third to fifth is between KIA (74-61-2, 7 games left), LG (75-62-1, 6 left) and Doosan (71-64-5, 4 left), and each of the three can still finish third, fourth or fifth. KIA's ceiling is 81-61-2 (.570) and its floor 74-68-2 (.521); LG's ceiling is 81-62-1 (.566) and its floor 75-68-1 (.524); Doosan's ceiling is 75-64-5 (.540) and its floor 71-68-5 (.511). If no game is drawn, the order is settled two clubs at a time. KIA is sure to finish above Doosan once its wins and Doosan's losses add up to 3, and above LG once its wins and LG's losses add up to 7. LG is sure to finish above Doosan once its wins and Doosan's losses add up to 3, and above KIA once its wins and KIA's losses add up to 7. Doosan needs its wins and LG's losses to add up to 8 to be sure of finishing above LG, and its wins and KIA's losses to add up to 9 to be sure of finishing above KIA. KIA's win at LG on Sunday cut both of KIA's counts: above Doosan from 4 to 3, and above LG from 9 to 7, because the KIA win and the LG loss both count. Doosan's counts fell too: against LG from 10 to 8, because Doosan's win and LG's loss both count, and against KIA from 10 to 9, by Doosan's win alone. LG's two counts, 3 above Doosan and 7 above KIA, did not move.
The clinch wins by rank on the team pages and the magic number page count the games left as scheduled: a win over a rival is that rival's loss, and a game between two other clubs has only one winner, or is drawn. Counted that way, KIA and LG are each sure of a top-four finish with three more wins whatever else happens, and of third with six. For KIA that means six of its last 7; for LG, all 6. Either can still finish third with fewer wins if other results go its way. Six KIA wins must include at least one of its two games against LG, so KIA's wins and LG's losses reach 7. Five LG wins can come with a split against KIA and stop at 6. The two meet twice more, on Monday at LG's park and on the 12th at KIA's, and LG also hosts Doosan on the 7th while KIA hosts Samsung on the 6th. Doosan needs help even if it wins all 4 games it has left. It has no games left against KIA and one against LG, so winning out gives it 4 wins plus 1 LG loss, 5, short of 8. By the same count before Sunday, KIA needed seven wins to be sure of third and four to be sure of the top four, so each fell by one. LG still needs six to be sure of third, but with 6 games left instead of 7 that now means winning out. The 7 our last update quoted for LG's third place was the team pages' figure before they counted head-to-head games this way.
Those counts decide the places. Once KIA or LG is sure to finish above Doosan, that club cannot finish below fourth, so it would host any Wild Card round it plays, and Doosan cannot reach third. If both are, Doosan is fixed in fifth and plays the Wild Card round away. Third goes to the club that is sure to finish above both of the others.
Monday, October 5, has the same five games at the same parks as Sunday: KIA at LG, Doosan at Samsung, Lotte at KT, SSG at NC and Kiwoom at Hanwha. We ran all 243 results, draws included. If KT beats Lotte and Samsung loses to Doosan, KT clinches first that night and Samsung is fixed in second, because KT's floor of 86-53-5 (.619) rises above Samsung's ceiling of 87-54-3 (.617). That is 27 of the 243, and no other result matters. A draw in either game is not enough: if KT draws and Samsung loses, KT's floor of 85-53-6 (.616) stays just under Samsung's ceiling. Whatever happens on Monday, LG, KIA and Doosan all stay third to fifth. The counts do move. If no game is drawn, KT's 2 drops by one if KT wins and by one if Samsung loses. The 3 that LG and KIA each need for finishing above Doosan drops by one for whichever of them wins the KIA-LG game, and by one for both if Doosan loses.
Tuesday, October 6, has five games: KT at Kiwoom, NC at LG, Doosan at Lotte, SSG at Hanwha and Samsung at KIA. We ran all ten games of Monday and Tuesday together, draws included, 59,049 combinations. If no game is drawn, KT clinches first by Tuesday night once its wins and Samsung's losses over the two days add up to 2. With draws it goes like this. Two KT wins are enough on their own, a KT win and a draw are enough unless Samsung wins both, and a KT win and a loss need at least one Samsung loss. Two KT draws need a Samsung loss or two Samsung draws, a KT draw and a loss need Samsung to win neither and lose at least once, and two KT losses need two Samsung losses. That is 34,992 of the 59,049. Samsung cannot clinch first by Tuesday whatever happens. In the race for third to fifth, LG is sure to finish above Doosan in 22,599 and KIA in 10,935. If no game is drawn, LG needs its wins (against KIA and NC) and Doosan's losses (to Samsung and at Lotte) to add up to 3, and KIA its own wins (at LG and against Samsung) and Doosan's losses to add up to 3. Counting each draw as half, LG's wins and Doosan's losses plus half of LG's and Doosan's draws need to reach 2.5, while KIA's, counted the same way with KIA's and Doosan's draws, need to reach 3. If both happen, Doosan is fixed in fifth. If no game is drawn, that takes Doosan losing both while LG and KIA each win at least once, so the loser of Monday's KIA-LG game has to win on Tuesday. That is 5,589 of the 59,049, and in 3,078 of them KT clinches first the same night. Nobody can be sure of third by Tuesday, and the order between LG and KIA stays open. In 10,881 every top-five range stays as it is.
How to read these numbers. A reachable finish is a boundary set by ceilings and floors: the best finish assumes a club wins every game it has left while its rivals lose theirs, and the worst the reverse. A club that can only draw level is not counted above you when finding your best finish, and is counted above you when finding your worst, so every count in this piece is the point at which a rival can no longer even finish level. The standings show each club's reachable finish, the magic number page the counts for each place, the fixtures the games left, the postseason page the bracket and tie rules, and the methodology page the working behind every figure. The what-if page lets you set any game still to be played. Each club's answer is on its team page: KT, Samsung, KIA, LG, Doosan.
