KBO postseason race 2026 - Doosan needs 9 wins from its last 12 to clinch the fifth spot

Doosan holds the fifth and final postseason place, and the margin is exactly three losses. The club has 12 games left and needs 9 of them to clinch regardless of what anyone else does. A fourth loss puts that total out of reach, and Doosan's place stops being its own to decide.

Every number below is computed from results through Sunday, September 20. All ten clubs played that day and the next fixtures are on the 22nd, so the slate is complete. Every clinch number assumes the worst case, that every rival wins every remaining game.

Sunday's five games went mostly against the clubs that needed help. LG beat Hanwha 4-3 at home. KIA won 8-6 at NC. KT beat Doosan 9-8, Lotte beat Samsung 13-6, and SSG beat Kiwoom 10-5. The two chasers who won are not the two closest to the line. On winning percentage the chase pack runs NC .468, SSG .457, Lotte .441 and Hanwha .429, so the nearest and the furthest, NC and Hanwha, are the two that lost.

The top of the table is close to settled. KT (78-47-4) has clinched a postseason place and cannot finish lower than fourth. Samsung (76-52-3) has clinched as well, with a floor of fifth. Neither has locked first place: KT's reachable range is first to fourth, Samsung's is first to fifth. LG (75-55-1) needs one win, and until it lands, LG's worst reachable finish is sixth, which is outside the field. KIA (71-57-2) needs four wins from 14, a cushion of ten losses, and can still fall as far as eighth.

The fifth spot comes down to one comparison. NC is 59-67-2 with 16 games left. Win all 16 and NC finishes 75-67-2, a winning percentage of .528, since draws are excluded from the KBO calculation. Doosan is 65-62-5 with 12 left. At 9-3 Doosan finishes 74-65-5, .532, and stays ahead. At 8-4 it finishes 73-66-5, .525, and does not. That is where the number nine comes from, and why the margin is three losses and not four. Every other club below Doosan tops out under .504 even by winning out, so NC alone sets the bar.

Below the line, four clubs are alive and one is not. NC's tragic number is 9: nine more losses and the top five is impossible even if NC wins everything else. With 16 games left, that is the longest rope in the chase pack. SSG (58-69-5) is at 6 with 12 games left. Lotte (56-71-2) is at 5 with 15 left, the sharpest mismatch on the board, the second longest schedule in the chase pack behind NC's 16 paired with one of the shortest margins. Hanwha (54-72-4) is at 3 with 14 left. Kiwoom (45-85-4) is already eliminated.

The reachable rank ranges say things the standings do not. Doosan's best finish is second, not first, and its worst is ninth, an eight place span that is the widest in the league alongside KIA's. KIA can still finish anywhere from first to eighth. Hanwha's ceiling is exactly fifth, so the last spot is the only postseason finish left on its board, and its tragic number is 3. NC can still reach third; SSG and Lotte can reach fourth.

There are no games on Monday, September 21, and the schedule jumps from Sunday to Tuesday. Four games open the week on the 22nd: KT at SSG, Lotte at Hanwha, NC at Samsung, and Doosan at Kiwoom. Doosan draws the one club already eliminated, then hosts KIA on the 23rd. NC's next three are all against clubs that have already clinched, Samsung on the 22nd and KT on the 23rd and 24th, so the team that needs to win nearly everything has drawn the two best records. Lotte and Hanwha meet on both the 22nd and the 23rd, and that pair counts twice: every Lotte win is a Hanwha loss, and Hanwha's tragic number is 3.
