KBO fifth place 2026 - Doosan need 19 wins from 19 games, so one more loss ends their own control

With the September 9 games complete, fifth placed Doosan's season fits on one line. 62-59-4, a percentage of .512. Nineteen games left and a clinch number of 19. Winning all nineteen is the only way they settle a postseason place without reference to anyone else, and the moment they lose once, fifth place becomes something they hold at other clubs' pleasure.

The arithmetic is simple. Doosan winning out finish 81-59-4, and sixth placed NC winning all 26 of theirs finish 82-60. Doosan are ahead on percentage. One Doosan defeat makes it 80-60-4, and an NC sweep then clears it. That is the point where a clinch number of 19 and 19 games remaining meet.

Doosan are 1-7 in September. They lost 6-1 at Hanwha in Daejeon on the 8th and 1-0 to SSG at Jamsil on the 9th, one run across the two games. They are 3-7 in their last ten and have lost two straight. The lead over sixth place was eight games on August 30. On September 9 it is 3.5.

NC, doing the chasing, are 56-60-2 at .483. They beat KIA 5-4 in Changwon on September 9 and are 5-2 for the month. Reaching Doosan's current .512 would take 17 wins from their last 26, a rate of .654. The seven extra games they hold is NC's only weapon.

The decider is the five head to head games left. Doosan lead the season series 8-3. A tie for fifth in the regular season goes to a one game playoff, and the home ground goes to the club that won the season series. NC sweeping all five finishes the series 8-8, which moves to the next criterion. Doosan taking one of the five makes it 9-7 and locks the home ground. The standings keep getting worse for Doosan and the rule book has favoured them for two weeks straight.

The top is tighter. KT beat Samsung 2-0 in Daegu on September 9, Ko Young-pyo winning and Won Tae-in losing. That single game leaves Samsung 73-47-3 at .608 in first and KT 71-46-3 at .607 in second, .608 to .607 and half a game apart. Samsung's clinch number is 9 wins from 21 games, KT's is 11 from 24.

The tie conditions still favour Samsung. They lead the season series 9-4 with three meetings left, so KT sweeping all three finishes 7-9. If a first place playoff happens, the venue is already fixed as Daegu.

The busiest club this week has been Hanwha. Swept by KT from September 1 to 3 to reach a nine game losing streak, they have won five in a row since. They took all three in Sajik against Lotte, 14-4, 11-6 and 8-2, then went home to Daejeon and beat Doosan 6-1 on September 8 with Ryu Hyun-jin winning, and LG 19-3 on the 9th. At 54-65-3 they are seventh, back ahead of eighth placed Lotte at .441 and ninth placed SSG at .438. Their season series with Doosan is already finished at 8-7-1.

The club falling the other way is LG. They lost 4-3 to Samsung on September 5, 10-4 on the 6th, 8-3 to Kiwoom on the 8th and 19-3 to Hanwha on the 9th, four straight. At 68-55-1 and .553 they still hold third, but fourth placed KIA are 66-54-2 at .550, .553 to .550 and effectively half a game. LG lead the season series 7-4 with five meetings left, so KIA would have to sweep the series to turn the order over. LG's clinch number is 15 wins from 20 games.

Four games are scheduled for September 10. Hanwha are at SSG in Munhak, KT at Lotte in Sajik, NC at KIA in Gwangju, and Kiwoom at Doosan in Jamsil. Samsung and LG are idle. Doosan losing today makes a self clinch arithmetically impossible.
