Manchester City had won all seven of their matches. On October 24, Korean time, they lost 2-1 at Aston Villa. The same day Arsenal beat Everton 2-0, so both clubs are on 21 points with seven wins and a defeat, City ahead on goal difference, 20 scored and 9 conceded against Arsenal's 13 and 5. A week ago City needed 91 more points to be sure of the title. Now Arsenal can reach 111, the same as City's ceiling, so City cannot guarantee finishing above them and have no title number. Arsenal's title tragic number of 31 is gone for the same reason. Nobody holds a title number, and Brighton's ceiling is 106.

Everything here is as of the October 26 update. Eighty of the season's 380 matches are in, and all 20 clubs have played eight and have 30 left, worth up to 90 points each. The round ran from October 24 to October 26, Korean time, home side first: Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester City, Arsenal 2-0 Everton, Ipswich 1-1 Nottingham Forest and Coventry 0-1 Fulham on the 24th, Crystal Palace 0-2 Newcastle, Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth, Liverpool 2-0 Brighton, Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham and Hull City 1-1 Brentford on the 25th, and Sunderland 0-0 Leeds on the 26th.

The four clubs with a top four clinch number are not the same four. Our previous piece said Chelsea's 93 and Tottenham's 93 met head to head and a Tottenham win would end Chelsea's. Tottenham won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea, on 13 points with a ceiling of 103, now have no number and a top four tragic number of 30. Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0, moved from 12 points to 15, and took the fourth number, 89. Liverpool are fourth and Chelsea fifth.

The line fell from 106 to 104. It has to clear the fourth highest ceiling among a club's rivals, and a rival who can only finish level still counts. Chelsea's 106 had been that fourth ceiling. It is 103 now, the highest below the top four, so one above it is 104. Manchester City's and Arsenal's 21 plus 83, Brighton's 16 plus 88 and Liverpool's 15 plus 89 all come to it. Of the 90 points each has left, City may drop 7, Arsenal 7, Brighton 2 and Liverpool 1. Arsenal's margin went from 5 to 7 and City's from 8 to 7. Brentford, Leeds, Newcastle and Aston Villa are on 11 points, sixth to ninth, each with a ceiling of 101.

At the bottom, the total every safety number points at fell from 99 to 97. Three clubs go down, so the bar sits one above the third lowest ceiling, and the three lowest are now Sunderland on 95 and Nottingham Forest and Coventry on 96. Sunderland drew 0-0 with Leeds and Forest drew 1-1 at Ipswich, and both kept a relegation tragic number, now 30 each, every match they have left. Coventry lost 1-0 at home to Fulham, lost the safety number of 93 they had, and carry a relegation tragic number of 30 too.

Fulham went the other way. The win at Coventry took them from 5 points to 8 and a ceiling of 98, one above the bar, so they swapped a relegation tragic number of 31 for a safety number of 89. Bournemouth won 3-0 at Manchester United and Tottenham won at Chelsea, so both moved from 6 points to 9, and their 93s, every point they had left, became 88. Manchester United and Crystal Palace both lost and are on 7 points with a safety number of 90, every point they have left. Seventeen clubs carry a safety number, from 76 for Manchester City and Arsenal up to those two 90s.

Nothing is settled at either end. No club has a zero in any of the six columns, and every club can still finish anywhere from first to twentieth. The next round cannot change that: after it the widest gap in the table can be 19 points, with 29 matches, 87 points, left for everyone.

The next round runs from October 31 to November 3, Korean time. Chelsea host Manchester United on the 31st. On November 1 Manchester City host Brighton, Aston Villa host Fulham, Coventry host Sunderland and Tottenham host Crystal Palace. Liverpool host Arsenal on November 2, and Newcastle host Everton on the 3rd. City and Arsenal are level, and Arsenal play at Liverpool, who hold the fourth top four number.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum a club must still collect for an outcome to be guaranteed even if every rival wins every remaining match. A tragic number is how many more defeats make an outcome impossible even if the club wins everything else. A reachable range is the highest and the lowest finishing place still arithmetically open. On ties, a rival who can only draw level with a club is still counted as a threat to it, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a day, while in the other direction a rival has to finish clearly above a club to eliminate it. Goal difference, head to head records and the league's own tiebreakers are not part of the calculation. The table is at, the remaining fixtures at, the qualification and relegation rules at, every club's numbers at, the method at, and a single club's lines on its own page: Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Fulham.
