NBA standings after opening week 2026-27: Rockets 5-0, Grizzlies 4-0 and Trail Blazers 3-0 unbeaten, three teams winless, and why no team has a playoff or play-in clinch number yet
As of the October 29 update (KST), 68 of the 1,230 regular-season games are done. Houston (5-0), Memphis (4-0) and Portland (3-0) are the unbeaten teams, all in the West; Brooklyn, New Orleans and Sacramento have lost all four of their games. Detroit and Philadelphia lead the East at 4-1. Every team has played three to five of its 82 games, and no team has a clinch number or a tragic number for a top-six berth or for a play-in place in the top ten.

Three teams in the West have not lost. Houston have won all five of their games, the only 5-0 record among the 30 teams; Memphis are 4-0 and Portland 3-0. All three are at 1.000, and the standings list them Houston, Portland, Memphis. The East has no unbeaten team. Detroit and Philadelphia sit first and second at 4-1, with Toronto, Boston and Cleveland next at 3-1. At the other end three teams have lost all four of their games: Brooklyn in the East, New Orleans and Sacramento in the West.
Every figure here is as of the update of October 29, Korea time. The regular season opened on October 21 in the United States, October 22 in Korea, and 30 teams play 82 games each for a total of 1,230; 68 of those are done. Teams have played different numbers of games: Portland and Phoenix three, ten teams four and eighteen teams five, leaving each team 77 to 79 games. The records and the order are exactly what this site's NBA standings page calculates. Conference position is by winning percentage, and equal percentages are separated by the site's tiebreak.
In the East, Detroit (4-1), Philadelphia (4-1), Toronto, Boston and Cleveland (3-1) and Charlotte (3-2) hold the top six. Atlanta, New York, Indiana and Washington are all 2-3 in seventh to tenth, and Orlando are eleventh at 1-3. Below them Miami, Milwaukee and Chicago are 1-4 and Brooklyn 0-4. In the West, Houston, Portland and Memphis are followed by the LA Lakers and Oklahoma City at 4-1 in fourth and fifth. Minnesota, San Antonio and Dallas share a 3-2 record across sixth to eighth; Denver (2-2) are ninth and Golden State (2-3) tenth. Phoenix (1-2), the LA Clippers (1-3) and Utah (1-4) are eleventh to thirteenth, and New Orleans and Sacramento are 0-4. The division leaders are Philadelphia in the Atlantic, Detroit in the Central, Charlotte in the Southeast, Portland in the Northwest, Houston in the Southwest and the Lakers in the Pacific, though division standings change nothing about who reaches the playoffs in the NBA.
Here is how the places are decided. In each conference seeds 1 to 6 go straight to the playoffs, and the four teams in seventh to tenth play the play-in tournament for the last two places. Eleventh and below are done. That is why this site counts two numbers: a clinch number for the top ten, which is the play-in, and a separate clinch number for the top six, which is a direct berth. A clinch number is the fewest further wins that guarantee the place even if every rival wins every game it has left; a tragic number is the further losses after which the place is impossible even if the team wins everything else. Right now neither number exists for any team. Houston at 5-0 would finish 5-77 if they lost their remaining 77 games, and Sacramento at 0-4 would finish 78-4 if they won their remaining 78. Three to five games out of 82 do not narrow any team's range of finishes.
How to read this. An opening-week table shows large gaps in winning percentage, but those gaps are the size of one or two results. It also mixes teams that have played five games with teams that have played three. This site's NBA magic number page fills in a figure the moment the arithmetic guarantees a place or rules one out. Until then a blank does not mean unknown; it means no team has yet been excluded from any place. All 30 teams can still finish anywhere from first to fifteenth in their conference.
