All four Division Series Game 3s and the two National League Game 4s were played at the lower seeds on Wednesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 8, Korea time. On October 7 the two National League Game 3s were played: San Diego beat Milwaukee 4-3, and the Dodgers won 3-1 in Atlanta. Four games followed on October 8. Tampa Bay won Game 3 4-3 in New York to complete a sweep, and Milwaukee, 3-1 at San Diego, and the Dodgers, 4-1 at Atlanta, both won Game 4 to take their series 3-1. Cleveland won Game 3 9-3 at the White Sox to make that series 2-1. None of the six games went to extra innings. Tampa Bay in the American League and Milwaukee and the Dodgers in the National League are through to the best-of-seven League Championship Series, and the Yankees, San Diego and Atlanta are out. The only Division Series still going is Cleveland-White Sox, which the White Sox lead 2-1.
Every result and date here comes from the ESPN postseason data behind this site's postseason page and team pages. The cut-off is Thursday afternoon, October 8, Korea time: 14 Division Series games are final, and Game 4 of Cleveland-White Sox has not been played. Dates are Korea dates, with the US date added where it helps. When the remaining series can end was worked out by going through every way its remaining games can fall. This piece covers results and the arithmetic of the games left only, with no forecasts and no probabilities.
Tampa Bay-Yankees. Top seed Tampa Bay won Games 1 and 2 at home, 1-0 and 5-2, and then Game 3 in New York 4-3 on Thursday, October 8 in Korea (Wednesday, October 7 in the US) to sweep the series. Two of the three games were decided by one run, and Tampa Bay outscored the Yankees 10-5. As our previous piece said it could, Tampa Bay finished the series in the earliest game it could, Game 3 on October 8. Tampa Bay, which skipped the Wild Card round, has won all three of its postseason games. The Yankees beat Boston 2-0 in the Wild Card Series but lost all three Division Series games. Games 4 and 5 will not be played.
Cleveland-White Sox. The sixth-seeded White Sox won Games 1 and 2 at second seed Cleveland, 3-0 and 4-3, but Cleveland won Game 3 9-3 on October 8 in Chicago, in the White Sox's first home game of this postseason. It is the White Sox's first postseason loss, after four road wins that include the two at Houston in the Wild Card Series. The White Sox lead 2-1, and Cleveland has outscored them 12-10 over the three games. Game 4 is in Chicago again on Friday, October 9 in Korea (Thursday, October 8 in the US), and Game 5, if needed, is in Cleveland on Sunday, October 11 (Saturday, October 10 in the US). Three ways are left. If the White Sox win Game 4, they finish the series at home on October 9. If Cleveland wins Game 4, the series is level at 2-2 and the winner of Game 5 in Cleveland on October 11 takes it. Cleveland has to win both Game 4 in Chicago and Game 5 at home, while the White Sox need one of the two. Either way the series ends on October 9 or October 11, so Tampa Bay's opponent in the American League Championship Series is known by October 11 at the latest.
Milwaukee-San Diego. Top seed Milwaukee won Games 1 and 2 at home, 3-2 and 4-3, and then San Diego won Game 3 at home 4-3 on Wednesday, October 7 in Korea. This was the only one of the four series that could have ended that day, and it did not. Milwaukee won Game 4 in San Diego 3-1 on Thursday, October 8 to take the series 3-1. Three of the four games were decided by one run, and Milwaukee outscored San Diego 13-10.
Dodgers-Atlanta. Level at 1-1 after two games in Los Angeles, the series was settled by the two games in Atlanta. The Dodgers won Game 3 3-1 on Wednesday, October 7 and Game 4 4-1 on Thursday, October 8, Korea time, to take it 3-1. Of the two ways our previous piece gave the Dodgers, winning both games in Atlanta or one of them plus Game 5 at home, it was the first. The Dodgers outscored Atlanta 14-8 over the four games, and Atlanta scored one run in each of its two home games.
Across the 14 Division Series games, the road side has won eight and the home side six. Of the six games played at the lower seeds on October 7 and 8, the home side won only one, San Diego's Game 3. Seven of the 14 were decided by one run, and none went to extra innings. All three finished series ended at the lower seed's park, and all three were won by the higher seed.
The National League Championship Series is top seed Milwaukee against the second-seeded Dodgers. It is a best of seven, and in the schedule data the home pattern is 2-3-2: Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 in Milwaukee and Games 3 to 5 in Los Angeles. Games 1 and 2 are on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13 in Korea, Games 3 to 5 from Thursday, October 15 to Saturday, October 17, and Games 6 and 7 on Monday, October 19 and Tuesday, October 20, with Games 5 to 7 played only if needed. The American League Championship Series is top seed Tampa Bay against the Cleveland-White Sox winner: Games 1 and 2 in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, October 13 and Wednesday, October 14, Games 3 to 5 at the opponent's park from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18, and Games 6 and 7 back in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21. The schedule data has no start times yet for either series, so the Korea dates given are the day after the US game dates, as on this site's schedule page. A club needs four wins, so neither series can end before Game 4: on the current schedule the NLCS ends between October 16 and October 20 and the ALCS between October 17 and October 21. Korea start times will appear on the schedule page once they are set.
Each club's page shows where it stands in the postseason. Through to the League Championship Series are Tampa Bay, Milwaukee and the Dodgers; still in the Division Series are Cleveland and the White Sox; and out in the Division Series are the Yankees, San Diego and Atlanta. Every series and the bracket are on the postseason page. The Game 1 and 2 results and the arithmetic for Games 3 to 5 are in our previous piece, and the seeding and tiebreaker rules are in our explainer. This site's clinch and tragic numbers are a regular-season calculation and stay frozen at the final standings of September 28.
