Two rounds ago no Ligue 1 club held a number that guaranteed a top three finish, and nobody held a title number either. Now two clubs do. Paris Saint-Germain won 5-1 at Le Havre on October 31, Korean time, and lead alone on 20 points, with a title clinch number of 74 and a top three clinch number of 73. Lille beat Lens 1-0 at home the same day and are second on 18 with a top three number of 75. Our piece after matchday seven had Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco all on 14. Matchday eight falls outside the figures used here, so this piece compares only with that one.

Everything here is as of the November 3 update. Eighty-one of the season's 306 matches are in, and all 18 clubs have played nine and have 25 left, worth up to 75 points each. The round ran from October 31 to November 3, Korean time, home side first: Lille 1-0 Lens, Le Havre 1-5 Paris Saint-Germain and Nice 5-2 Rennes on October 31, Strasbourg 5-1 Auxerre and Troyes 2-0 Le Mans on November 1, Marseille 2-0 Toulouse, Lyon 2-0 Angers and Paris FC 3-1 Monaco on November 2, and Lorient 0-2 Brest on November 3.

Over the two rounds Paris Saint-Germain added 6 points, Lille 4, Lyon and Paris FC 3 each and Monaco 1. Paris Saint-Germain have six wins, two draws and one defeat, with 21 goals for and 10 against. Lille have five wins, three draws and one defeat and have conceded 6, the fewest in the league. Lyon and Paris FC are on 17, Lyon ahead on goal difference, and Rennes, beaten 5-2 at Nice, are fifth on 16. Marseille, 2-0 winners over Toulouse, and Monaco, beaten 3-1 at Paris FC, are on 15.

Why Paris Saint-Germain and Lille now have numbers. To be sure of a top three place a club has to finish above all but two of its rivals, and a rival who can only finish level still counts as a threat. Paris Saint-Germain can reach 95. The three highest ceilings among their rivals are Lille's 93 and the 92 of Lyon and Paris FC, so 93 is enough: 20 plus 73. For the title only Lille's 93 matters, so the target is 94: 20 plus 74. With 75 points left, Paris Saint-Germain can drop 2 points and still be sure of the top three, and 1 point and still be sure of the title. Lille can reach 93, and their three highest rival ceilings are 95, 92 and 92, so they also need 93, which is 18 plus 75, every match left won. Lyon and Paris FC can reach 92 at most, which Paris Saint-Germain, Lille and each other can all match, so their numbers are blank.

Top three tragic numbers have appeared further down. Two rounds ago none of the five leaders had one. Now Rennes, Marseille, Monaco and Nice carry 25, every match they have left, and the numbers fall to 21 for Le Havre. Nobody has been eliminated. At the bottom the Ligue 1 relegates two clubs directly and the 16th plays a relegation play-off, so the line here is for avoiding automatic relegation, a top 16 finish, not for being safe. That total fell from 86 to 83. The two lowest ceilings are Le Havre's 77 and Le Mans's 82.

Le Havre have two draws and seven defeats and are still the only club without a win. Their relegation tragic number went from 26 to 24. Le Mans lost 2-0 at Troyes and are 17th on 7 points; two rounds ago they had 6 and a line of 80, and now they have no line and a relegation tragic number of 25, every match they have left. Troyes are on 8, up from 4, and Angers, beaten 2-0 at Lyon, are also on 8. Both carry a line of 75, which means winning every remaining match. Sixteen clubs carry a line, from 63 for Paris Saint-Germain up to 75 for Troyes and Angers.

Strasbourg beat Auxerre 5-1 and Brest won 2-0 at Lorient. Nice are eighth on 14, Lens ninth on 13, Brest and Lorient on 12, and Toulouse, Strasbourg and Auxerre on 10. Nothing is clinched or eliminated and every club can still finish anywhere from first to 18th. The next round cannot change that: after it the widest gap in the table can be 21 points, with 24 matches, 72 points, left for everyone.

The next round runs from November 7 to November 9, Korean time. Toulouse host Strasbourg on the 7th. On the 8th Auxerre host Paris FC, Rennes host Lille and Paris Saint-Germain host Troyes. On the 9th Brest host Lyon, Lens host Marseille, Le Havre host Lorient, Le Mans host Monaco and Angers host Nice. The full list is at.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum further points that guarantee an outcome even if every rival takes every point still on its own schedule. A tragic number is the number of further defeats after which an outcome becomes impossible even if the club wins everything else. A blank means no run of that club's own results settles the question. A rival who can only draw level still counts as a threat to a clinch, while a rival who is merely level cannot eliminate a club. Goal difference, head to head records and the official tiebreakers are not part of the calculation.
