Madrid derby result and LaLiga standings September 21 2026: Atletico 16 points, then a 19 day gap

Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 2-1 at home on Sunday, and once Monday's three matches were done LaLiga stopped for 19 days. Atletico end the round on 16 points, Real Madrid on 15. Atletico now need 91 further points to guarantee a top four finish, Real Madrid 92. Neither number can move again until October 10, because our fixture feed carries no LaLiga match at all between now and that date.

Every figure here is as of the September 21 update, with 69 of the season's 380 matches played. Ten results from Saturday to Monday are counted, one for every club. Espanyol 1-3 Elche, Osasuna 1-1 Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Club 0-0 Alaves on Saturday. Sevilla 1-3 Barcelona, Atletico Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid, Getafe 1-0 Malaga and Celta Vigo 5-0 Racing Santander on Sunday. Valencia 2-3 Real Sociedad, Deportivo La Coruna 1-1 Real Betis and Villarreal 3-1 Levante on Monday. Eighteen clubs have now played seven matches and have 31 left. Athletic Club and Levante have played six and have 32.

The four clubs in the Champions League places each carry a top four clinch figure, the minimum number of further points that guarantees the place whatever every rival does. Barcelona 86, Atletico 91, Betis 91, Real Madrid 92. Add each figure to its club's current total and the answer is identical every time. Barcelona 21 plus 86 is 107. Atletico 16 plus 91 is 107. Betis 16 plus 91 is 107. Real Madrid 15 plus 92 is 107. There is one bar, at 107 points, and those four figures are four different distances to it.

The bar belongs to Sevilla. They are fifth on 13 points with 31 matches left, so the most they can finish on is 106. In this engine a rival who can climb to exactly your total still counts against you, so clearing Sevilla means finishing above 106 rather than level with it, and 107 is the first total that does. That single rule is why these figures read 86, 91, 91 and 92 instead of a point lower each. It also means a clinch on this site can be confirmed a day after an official announcement, never a day before.

Sevilla have no top four clinch figure of their own. Measured from their line the ceilings above them are Barcelona 114, Atletico 109, Betis 109 and Real Madrid 108, so the fourth of those is 108 and Sevilla would need 109 to clear it. Their own ceiling is 106, three short. What Sevilla carry instead is a top four tragic number of 31 against 31 matches left, the first such number anywhere in the table, because none of the four clubs above them has one. Alaves, sixth on 11 points, carry 30. So do Athletic Club, tenth on 8 points but with 32 matches left, which gives them the same ceiling of 104 that Alaves have.

The title column is emptier still. Barcelona are the only club with a title clinch figure, and it is 89 further points, which puts the title bar at 110, one above the 109 that Atletico and Betis can still reach. Nobody else has one, because no other club can reach a total above Barcelona's ceiling of 114. Atletico, Betis and Real Madrid each carry a title tragic number of 30 against 31 matches left, and Sevilla carry 29. A tragic number is the count of further defeats after which the outcome is impossible even if the club takes everything else on offer, so 30 out of 31 means that column is not yet carrying information.

Now the board freezes. Both kinds of figure need somebody to play. A clinch figure falls when the club banks points, and also when the clubs setting its bar drop them. A tragic number falls when the club loses, and also when rivals still below its ceiling bank points and climb past it. For 19 days neither route is open to anyone. Whatever the table reads on Monday night it reads the same on October 9. The reachable rank range, meaning the highest and lowest finish still arithmetically available, runs from first to twentieth for all twenty clubs, and it will still read that way then.

What to watch when it restarts. The round is ten fixtures, home side first, dates in Korean time. October 10: Malaga against Espanyol, Alaves against Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano against Athletic Club. October 11: Barcelona against Getafe, Real Sociedad against Deportivo La Coruna, Elche against Celta Vigo, Real Madrid against Villarreal. October 12: Racing Santander against Valencia, Real Betis against Osasuna. October 13: Levante against Sevilla. Atletico travel to Alaves with 91 points still to find, Real Madrid host Villarreal with 92, Barcelona host Getafe with 86 and Betis host Osasuna with 91. Only two of the ten can bring the 107 bar down. Taken on its own, a Sevilla draw or defeat at Levante lowers the 106 ceiling the bar is built on, and the bar falls to 105 for all four clubs. A Real Madrid defeat by Villarreal would lower it to 106 for Barcelona, Atletico and Betis, because Real Madrid's own ceiling would drop to 105, below Sevilla's, and Real Madrid would lose their own number, since 105 falls short of the 107 they need.

Correction, September 29: An earlier version counted eight results from Saturday to Monday and eight fixtures in the next round, said Sevilla were not among those fixtures, and said the 107 bar comes down only when Sevilla drop points. There were ten results and there are ten fixtures, Sevilla play at Levante on October 13, and a Real Madrid defeat would also lower the bar for the other three clubs. The paragraphs above now say so. None of the clinch or tragic numbers changed.

Update, October 14: The round was played from October 10 to 13, Korean time, and our piece on the results is at. Atletico won 2-1 at Alaves, Real Madrid beat Villarreal 1-0, Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0 and Betis beat Osasuna 5-2. Sevilla drew 3-3 at Levante, and as this piece said, that brought the 107 bar down to 105 for all four clubs: Barcelona's 86 is 81, Atletico's and Betis's 91 are 86, and Real Madrid's 92 is 87. Barcelona's title clinch figure is 86 and still points at 110. Rayo Vallecano against Athletic Club has no result in the October 13 update, so the round counted nine results. Nothing is clinched or eliminated, and every club's reachable range still runs from first to twentieth.

How to read these numbers. A clinch figure is the minimum number of further points that guarantees an outcome even if every rival wins everything left, which is why the figures are so large in September. A tragic number is the number of further defeats after which the outcome becomes impossible even if the club wins everything else. A reachable rank range is the highest and lowest final position still arithmetically available. Nothing is ever settled on a tie. A rival who can still draw level with you blocks your clinch, and a rival you can only draw level with does not eliminate you.
