K League 2 promotion race 2026: Suwon Samsung clinch a top five place by beating Hwaseong on October 18, and the line is now 58

As of the October 11 update. Suwon Samsung's clinch number for a top five place is down from 7 to 2, so a home win over Hwaseong on October 18 settles it, and a draw or even a defeat does too if Busan fail to beat Jeonnam the same day. Busan's draw at Paju cut their ceiling to 57, which moved the guaranteed line from 60 to 58 for all five clubs in the promotion places. Six clubs can still finish first, down from nine.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings need two more points to be certain of a top five place in K League 2, and their next match is at home to Hwaseong FC on Sunday, October 18. A win settles it whatever else happens. It does not even have to be a win. We ran all 6,561 win, draw and loss combinations of the next round's eight matches through the engine behind the site's tables, and a Suwon draw or a Suwon defeat settles it too, provided Busan IPark do not beat Jeonnam Dragons at home the same day. No other club can clinch a top five place or the title in that round. All five clinch numbers in the promotion places now point at the same total, 58: Suwon need 2, Suwon FC and Seoul E-Land 7, Daegu 12 and Hwaseong 14. On September 21 the same line was 60.

Every figure here is as of the October 11 update. Of the season's 272 matches, 224 have been played and 48 are left. The September 20 update stood at 216, so the eight matches between October 9 and 11 are everything that has happened since. Suwon FC beat Hwaseong 1-0 and Seoul E-Land won 1-0 at Gimpo on October 9, when Chungbuk Cheongju also beat Seongnam 3-1. On October 10 Jeonnam beat Yongin 2-1 and Cheonan City beat Gyeongnam 1-0, while Paju drew 1-1 with Busan and Gimhae drew 1-1 with Chungnam Asan. Suwon closed the round on October 11 by beating Ansan 4-1. Daegu did not play. Clinch numbers assume the worst case, that every rival takes maximum points from every match it has left, and a rival who can finish exactly level counts as a threat.

The table reads Suwon 56, Suwon FC 51, Seoul E-Land 51, Daegu 46, Hwaseong 44, Busan 42, Chungnam Asan 35, Gimpo 35, Gyeongnam 34, Chungbuk Cheongju 32, Seongnam 31, Paju 30, Yongin 27, Cheonan 26, Jeonnam 24, Ansan 22 and Gimhae 14. Suwon have played 26, won 17, drawn 5 and lost 4, with 43 scored and 21 conceded, and they are five points clear. Suwon FC are second rather than Seoul E-Land because the K League separates clubs level on points by goals scored first, 51 to 46, and the same rule puts Chungnam Asan above Gimpo, 35 goals to 31. Suwon FC have played 26 and Seoul E-Land 27, so Suwon FC have six matches left and Seoul E-Land five.

The line moved because of Busan, not because of anyone in the top five. Busan's draw at Paju left them on 42 with five matches left, a ceiling of 57, down from 59. Busan are now the highest ceiling outside the promotion places, so 58 is a total nobody below fifth can reach. That is why Hwaseong's number fell from 16 to 14 in a round they lost 1-0 at Suwon FC, and why Daegu's fell from 14 to 12 in a round they did not play. Suwon's 4-1 over Ansan took their number from 7 to 2. Suwon FC's win over Hwaseong and Seoul E-Land's win at Gimpo took both of theirs from 12 to 7, which for Suwon FC is 7 of the 18 points left and for Seoul E-Land 7 of 15. Daegu need 12 of 18. Hwaseong need 14 of 15, which is four wins and a draw or five wins, with Suwon away next.

The title is the second race, and it matters more here because the champion is promoted straight to K League 1, while the clubs below enter a promotion playoff. Suwon's title clinch number is down from 17 to 14. Suwon FC can reach 69, so 70 is beyond everyone, and 56 plus 14 is 70. Thirteen would leave Suwon exactly level with that ceiling, and a tie is not settled here. Fourteen of the 18 points left means four wins and two draws or better. The clubs that can still finish first are down from nine to six. Chungnam Asan, Gimpo and Gyeongnam all now have a ceiling below Suwon's 56 and a title tragic number of 0. The six that remain carry title tragic numbers of 5 for Suwon FC, 4 for Seoul E-Land, 3 for Daegu, 2 for Hwaseong and 1 for Busan, with Suwon the sixth. Suwon's worst reachable finish has risen from ninth to sixth: five clubs can still pass 56, Suwon FC to 69, Seoul E-Land to 66, Daegu to 64, Hwaseong to 59 and Busan to 57.

October 18 at Suwon moves more than Suwon's own line. A Suwon win ends Hwaseong's title race, and it ends Busan's too unless Busan beat Jeonnam the same day, while any Busan result short of a win ends Busan's title race whatever happens at Suwon. A Suwon win would also cut their title number to 8, 9 or 11, depending on the other results. Going the other way, a Hwaseong win at Suwon appears in the elimination conditions of all four clubs at the bottom who can be knocked out that weekend.

Those four are Yongin, Chungbuk Cheongju, Seongnam and Paju. Yongin are on a tragic number of 1, and a draw or a defeat at home to Ansan on October 17 ends them; even a win does not if Hwaseong win at Suwon the next day. Chungbuk Cheongju are on 2 and go to Daegu on October 17. A defeat there ends them unless Suwon beat Hwaseong and Busan fail to beat Jeonnam, and a draw ends them if Hwaseong win at Suwon. Seongnam are on 2 and host Suwon FC on October 17. They are out only if they lose, Daegu avoid defeat against Chungbuk Cheongju and Hwaseong win at Suwon. Paju are on 2 and go to Gimpo on October 17. A defeat ends them if Hwaseong win at Suwon, and a draw does if Daegu also avoid defeat. Busan, on 5, Chungnam Asan and Gimpo, both on 4, and Gyeongnam, on 3, cannot be knocked out that weekend. Cheonan, Jeonnam, Ansan and Gimhae were already out on September 20 and still are, and Cheonan are the club without a fixture in this round.

The round in full. On Saturday, October 17, Suwon FC are at Seongnam, Chungbuk Cheongju at Daegu, Chungnam Asan at Gyeongnam, Paju at Gimpo and Ansan at Yongin. On Sunday, October 18, Hwaseong are at Suwon, Jeonnam at Busan and Gimhae at Seoul E-Land.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the smallest further return, counted in league points, that guarantees an outcome even if every rival takes maximum points from everything it has left. A tragic number is the count of further defeats after which the outcome becomes impossible even if the club wins everything else, counted with every rival frozen on its current points. Zero means already settled, and a blank means arithmetic alone cannot get there yet. These numbers treat each rival on its own, so the combinations above, which use the real fixtures, can settle things sooner than the number says. A rival who can finish exactly level counts against a club when we decide a clinch, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a day, while a rival who can only draw level does not eliminate anyone. Goals scored, goal difference and the official tiebreakers are not part of this arithmetic.
