Clinch Desk · Wed, Nov 4
A week ago Arsenal and Manchester City were level on 21 and nobody held a title clinch number. On November 2, Korean time, Arsenal won 1-0 at Liverpool. A day earlier City had lost 1-0 at home to Brighton, their second defeat in a row. Arsenal are on 24 points with eight wins and a defeat, 14 scored and 5 conceded, City on 21 with seven wins and two defeats, and Brighton third on 19. Arsenal now have a title number of 85. With it they would finish on 109, one above City's ceiling of 108, and of the 87 points they have left they may drop 2. City's title tragic number is 29, every match they have left, and Brighton's is 28.
Everything here is as of the November 3 update. Ninety of the season's 380 matches are in, and all 20 clubs have played nine and have 29 left, worth up to 87 points each. The round ran from October 31 to November 3, Korean time, home side first: Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United on the 31st, Tottenham 2-0 Crystal Palace, Aston Villa 1-1 Fulham, Coventry 3-1 Sunderland, Brentford 2-0 Nottingham Forest, Hull City 2-2 Ipswich, Manchester City 0-1 Brighton and Bournemouth 2-0 Leeds on November 1, Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal on the 2nd, and Newcastle 0-1 Everton on the 3rd.
The fourth top four number changed hands again. Our previous piece had Liverpool taking it from Chelsea with 89, one point to spare. Liverpool lost to Arsenal and stayed on 15, and Chelsea's win over Manchester United took them from 13 to 16. Chelsea are fourth again with a number of 87, every point they have left, and Liverpool are fifth with no number and a top four tragic number of 29.
The line fell from 104 to 103. It has to clear the highest ceiling below the top four, and a rival who can only finish level still counts. That ceiling is now Liverpool's 102, so one above it is 103. Arsenal's 24 plus 79, City's 21 plus 82, Brighton's 19 plus 84 and Chelsea's 16 plus 87 all come to it. Of the 87 points each has left, Arsenal may drop 8, City 5, Brighton 3 and Chelsea none. Arsenal's margin went from 7 to 8, City's from 7 to 5 and Brighton's from 2 to 3. Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 and are sixth on 14 with a ceiling of 101.
At the bottom, the total every safety number points at fell from 97 to 95. Three clubs go down, so the bar sits one above the third lowest ceiling, and the lowest are now Sunderland on 92, Nottingham Forest on 93, and Manchester United and Crystal Palace on 94. Sunderland lost 3-1 at Coventry and Forest lost 2-0 at Brentford, and both keep a relegation tragic number, now 29 each, every match they have left. Manchester United lost 2-0 at Chelsea and Palace 2-0 at Tottenham. Both are on 7 points, and the safety numbers of 90 they had are gone, with no relegation tragic number in their place.
Coventry went the other way. The win over Sunderland took them from 6 points to 9 and a ceiling of 96, one above the bar, so they swapped a relegation tragic number of 30 for a safety number of 86. Fulham drew 1-1 at Aston Villa, moved from 8 points to 9, and their 89 became 86. Bournemouth beat Leeds 2-0 and Tottenham beat Palace, so both moved from 9 points to 12 and their 88s became 83. Sixteen clubs carry a safety number now, one fewer than a week ago, from Arsenal's 71 up to the 86s of Fulham and Coventry, who may drop 1 of their 87.
Nothing is settled at either end. No club has a zero in any of the six columns, and every club can still finish anywhere from first to twentieth. The next round cannot change that: after it the widest gap in the table can be 22 points, with 28 matches, 84 points, left for everyone.
The next round runs from November 7 to November 9, Korean time. On the 7th Everton host Coventry and Leeds host Tottenham. On November 8 Sunderland host Chelsea, Arsenal host Hull City, Fulham host Newcastle, Crystal Palace host Liverpool, Ipswich host Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest host Manchester City and Brighton host Brentford. Manchester United host Aston Villa on the 9th. Chelsea, whose number is every point they have left, go to the bottom club, and Liverpool, a point behind them, go to Palace.
How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum a club must still collect for an outcome to be guaranteed even if every rival wins every remaining match. A tragic number is how many more defeats make an outcome impossible even if the club wins everything else. A reachable range is the highest and the lowest finishing place still arithmetically open. On ties, a rival who can only draw level with a club is still counted as a threat to it, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a day, while in the other direction a rival has to finish clearly above a club to eliminate it. Goal difference, head to head records and the league's own tiebreakers are not part of the calculation. The table is at, the remaining fixtures at, the qualification and relegation rules at, every club's numbers at, the method at, and a single club's lines on its own page: Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Coventry.
