Serie A relegation 2026-27: why only three clubs have a tragic number, and why it equals their fixtures

Venezia has played five Serie A matches and lost five. No points, four goals scored, thirteen conceded, twentieth in the table. The only relegation figure the engine attaches to that record is a tragic number of 33, and Venezia has 33 matches left. The two numbers are the same number. As the table stands today, nothing settles Venezia's relegation short of losing every single match still on its fixture list.

Every figure here comes from the September 20 update, and that day's card is not finished. Venezia's 0-2 home defeat to Lazio is in the results. Parma against Genoa, Frosinone against Como and Fiorentina against Napoli are still to be played, and nothing below treats an unplayed match as played. None of this is a projection and none of it is a probability.

Three clubs out of twenty carry a relegation tragic number at all: Venezia at 33, Parma at 34 and Genoa at 34. In all three cases the number is identical to that club's entire remaining fixture list. Parma and Genoa have 34 matches left and a tragic number of 34. Venezia has 33 and 33. The other seventeen clubs have no relegation number whatsoever, which means no run of their own defeats, from where they stand now, would settle the question. That is what September looks like in arithmetic. Three clubs are on the board, and even for those three the condition is losing everything.

Parma and Genoa are level on one point and they meet each other on September 20 at Parma. Both have a draw and three defeats from four. Parma has scored two and conceded six, Genoa two and eight, and those two extra goals against are the whole of what puts Genoa nineteenth and Parma eighteenth. Leave the goal columns aside and their figures are identical: 34 matches left, a relegation tragic number of 34, and a safety number of 102 points. Parma has 34 matches left, and 34 wins are worth 102 points. So the number and the fixture list are the same thing once again. To guarantee safety on its own results, either club would have to win every match it has left.

Bologna is seventeenth with two points and is the more interesting case. It has no win from five, two draws and three defeats, three goals scored and six conceded. It has no relegation tragic number, so on today's table no sequence of Bologna defeats settles the drop by itself. It also has no safety number, and it is not alone in that column. Bologna is a point clear of Parma and Genoa and is still one of the two clubs, with Venezia, that cannot reach a guaranteed-safe total at all. For Bologna the reason is the fifth match. It has 33 left where Parma and Genoa have 34, which caps it at 101 points against a safety bar of 103, and a thirty-fourth fixture would have lifted it to 104. Venezia's blank cell has a blunter cause. With nothing on the board its ceiling is 99, and even an extra fixture would take it only to 102, still under the bar. The only figures Bologna carries at all today are a tragic number of 30 for a top-four place and a title tragic number of 30, and Venezia's title tragic number of 29 is the lowest in the league. Every one of those is a statement about the top of the table, not the bottom.

Here is where that bar of 103 comes from. Add any club's safety number to the points it already has and the answer is the same across the league: 103. That is the total which guarantees a top-seventeen finish today, out of the 114 points a 38-match season hands out, and it sits at 103 because 103 is the seventeenth-highest total still reachable by anyone on the board. Five clubs top out at exactly 103: Udinese, Torino, Monza, Parma and Genoa. Two clubs now top out below it, Bologna at 101 and Venezia at 99. A club whose best possible total is under the bar cannot post a number at all, which is why those two cells are empty. It is also why these safety figures should not be read as forecasts. A bar of 103 out of 114 is what guaranteed means after four or five matches, not what staying up will actually cost.

Above them the table has separated nothing. Udinese, Torino and Monza sit thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth on four points each from five matches, and all three carry the same safety number, 99, which is again every point they have left. Monza has conceded twelve, more than any club except Venezia, and Udinese eleven. Fiorentina is sixteenth on three points from four, one win and three defeats, five scored and eleven conceded, with a safety number of 100. Three clubs go down from this division. The engine still gives all twenty of them a best reachable finish of first and a worst reachable finish of twentieth, Venezia included, which is the plainest available measure of how little five rounds have decided.

What to watch next. Parma hosts Genoa on September 20, which puts two of the three clubs with a relegation number on the same pitch, level on a point, with matching engine numbers in every column above. The winner moves to four points and out of the bottom three as the table stands, and the loser stays on one. Fiorentina hosts Napoli the same day. Further down the fixture list Genoa hosts Fiorentina on October 10, Lecce hosts Bologna on October 11 and Inter hosts Parma on the same day. Those results move the safety bar as much as anything the bottom clubs do themselves, because the bar is set by the highest totals the rest of the league can still reach. How to read these numbers. A magic or clinch number is the minimum further points that guarantee an outcome even if every rival wins every match it has left. A tragic number is the further defeats after which the outcome is impossible even if the club wins everything else. A blank means no run of that club's own results can settle it from where it stands. Ties are counted against the club in question, so a clinch here can trail an official announcement by a day.
