Ligue 1 2026-27 table after matchday 5: Monaco need 86 of the 87 points left, and nobody is safe or eliminated

Monaco lead Ligue 1 after five matches on 13 points, and to be certain of the title on their own results they need 86 of the 87 points still available to them. Twenty-nine matches remain at three points each. One dropped point across the entire rest of the season is the whole margin. That is not a prediction about Monaco. It is a measure of how little five rounds can settle.

Every number here is computed as of the September 21 update, with 45 of the season's 306 matches played. All 18 clubs have now played five of their 34, so each one has 29 matches and 87 points still in front of it. Clinch numbers are counted in points rather than wins because Ligue 1 is a points table. The default line used here is the top three, which take the Champions League places, with the bottom two relegated. Goal difference does not enter any of these calculations.

Lyon are second on 11 points, three wins and two draws, after beating Rennes 4-0 at home on September 20. They have conceded two goals, the fewest in the division, and scored ten, the most alongside Strasbourg. Paris FC are third, also on 11 and also unbeaten, after a 2-1 win over Strasbourg on the same day. Neither club has a title clinch number at all. Winning all 29 would put either of them on 98, and Monaco's ceiling is 100. For a top-three place each needs 87, which is every point left on their schedule. Monaco need 85 for that same place, so two dropped points rather than one.

Lille and Rennes sit fourth and fifth on 10 points, and neither has a top-three clinch number either. Lille lost 2-1 at Nice on September 21, their first defeat of the season. Winning all 29 from here would take either club to 97. Five clubs can reach 97 or more: Monaco at 100, Lyon and Paris FC at 98, and Lille and Rennes at 97 each. There are three places. Three of those clubs, Monaco and Lyon and Paris FC, can finish above 97 outright, and three rivals finishing above a club fills every available place on their own. Lille and Rennes can additionally draw level with each other. So neither can guarantee anything by its own results yet.

Paris Saint-Germain are sixth on 8 points, two wins, two draws and one defeat, with eight goals scored and seven conceded. They won 2-1 at Marseille on September 21 and sit five points behind Monaco. They have no top-three clinch number either. Even 87 more points would put them on only 95, and five rivals can reach 95 or more: Monaco at 100, Lyon and Paris FC at 98, Lille and Rennes at 97. Five rivals for three places, so there is no total PSG can reach today that settles the question. In the other direction they have room. Their tragic number for a top-three place is 29, meaning they would have to lose all 29 remaining matches before that finish became impossible. For the title it is 28. Lose 28 of the 29 and a win in the other one still leaves them on 11, below the 13 Monaco already have.

The safety line, the total that guarantees a club finishes above the bottom two, is 91 points. Marseille are 17th on 3 and Le Havre 18th on 2, and neither can reach it. Marseille top out at 90 and Le Havre at 89, so neither has a safe clinch number at all today. They are also the only two clubs in the division carrying a relegation tragic number, and in both cases it is 29, the maximum: they would have to lose every remaining match for the drop to be certain. Le Havre are the only club still without a win, two draws and three defeats, and they lost 3-2 at Toulouse on September 20.

Holding that same 91-point line against the top of the table shows how early this is everywhere else. Monaco, top and unbeaten, still need 78 more points to be mathematically certain of avoiding the bottom two. Paris Saint-Germain need 83. Angers and Strasbourg, on 7, need 84. Le Mans and Auxerre, on 6, need 85. Brest, Lorient, Toulouse and Nice, level on 5, need 86. Lens and Troyes, 15th and 16th on 4 points, need all 87. Here is the cleanest summary of where the season stands. Every one of the 18 clubs has a best reachable finish of first and a worst reachable finish of 18th. Nothing has been closed off for anybody, in either direction.

There are no further fixtures in the data until October 10, when Lens host Lyon. October 11 brings six matches: Monaco host Toulouse, Paris Saint-Germain host Le Mans, Lille host Le Havre, Lorient host Paris FC, Nice host Strasbourg and Brest host Angers. October 12 has two: Rennes host Auxerre, fifth against tenth, and Troyes host Marseille, 16th against 17th. Monaco against Toulouse is the fixture that moves the number at the top, because the title margin there is a single dropped point. The dates are Korean time; in France the nine matches run from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October, with both October 12 matches on the Sunday.

Correction, October 6: An earlier version listed eight of the nine fixtures between October 10 and 12 and gave October 12 only Troyes against Marseille. Rennes against Auxerre, on October 12 Korean time (Sunday 11 October in France), was missing, and the paragraph above now includes it. Neither club has a title or top three clinch number. Added on its own to the table as it stands, no result there moves Monaco's title number; once the round's earlier results are in, it can. Monaco against Toulouse is still the one fixture that moves that number by itself. None of the clinch or tragic numbers changed.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum number of further points that guarantees a place even if every rival wins everything it has left. A tragic number is the number of further defeats after which a place is impossible even if the club wins everything else. Rank ranges are the highest and lowest finishes still arithmetically reachable. Nothing is ever settled on a tie. A rival who can only draw level still counts as a threat when we test a clinch, while a rival who is merely level does not count when we test elimination, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a day.
