Three Ligue 1 clubs held a number that guaranteed a top three finish going into the round of October 10 to 12, Korean time, and three still do. Two of them are different. Lyon lost 2-1 at Lens and Paris FC lost 1-0 at Lorient, and the figure each carried, all 87 of the points they had left, is gone: neither has a top three number at all now. Lille beat Le Havre 1-0 and Rennes beat Auxerre 4-1, and each now holds one, 83. Monaco drew 2-2 with Toulouse and kept theirs, which fell from 85 to 82.

Everything below is as of the October 12 update, with the round complete. That is 54 of the season's 306 matches, and all 18 clubs have played six with 28 to go, so 84 points are still on offer to each. The nine results, in Korean time: on October 10, Lens 2-1 Lyon. On October 11, Lille 1-0 Le Havre, Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Le Mans, Monaco 2-2 Toulouse, Brest 5-1 Angers, Lorient 1-0 Paris FC and Nice 2-1 Strasbourg. On October 12, Rennes 4-1 Auxerre and Troyes 0-2 Marseille. In France the round ran from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October. Ligue 1 is a points table, so clinch figures are counted in points and tragic figures in defeats.

Our preview of the round picked out Lens against Lyon as the one match where the number on each side was the full 87, Lyon's for a top three place and Lens's for survival. It said a club that dropped points there could no longer meet its number alone, and that whether a smaller one appeared would depend on the clubs around it. Both halves happened, one on each side. Lyon lost, stayed on 11 points, and their ceiling fell from 98 to 95. The top three line now sits at 96: Monaco's 14 plus 82, and Lille's and Rennes's 13 plus 83, all come to that total. Lyon's ceiling is one point below that line. Lens won, moved to 7 points with a ceiling of 91, and their survival number came down from 87 to 82. The 82 is 89 minus 7, because the survival line itself came down from 91 to 89 over the round.

Paris FC carried exactly the same 87 of 87 to Lorient a day later and lost 1-0. Their row now matches Lyon's: 11 points, a ceiling of 95, no top three number, and a top three tragic number of 28, which is every match they have left. Paris Saint-Germain joined them on 11 by beating Le Mans 3-1, so fourth, fifth and sixth are three clubs on 11 points with identical arithmetic: Lyon, Paris FC and PSG each have a ceiling of 95, no top three number, a tragic number of 28 and a survival number of 78.

Lille and Rennes went the other way. Before the round both were on 10 points with no top three number, because five clubs could reach 97 or more and there are three places. Now both are on 13 and their ceiling is still 97. The only rivals who can reach 96 are Monaco, up to 98, and the other club of the pair, up to 97. Two rivals for three places, so 96 is enough, and 96 is 83 more. Twenty-eight matches pay 84 for winning all of them and 82 for 27 wins and a draw, so 83 means every remaining match won in practice, the same demand Lyon and Paris FC carried before the round. Lille are second and Rennes third, both on 13 points; Lille have conceded four goals in six matches and Rennes ten.

Monaco drew 2-2 at home to Toulouse and are top on 14 points, with their ceiling down from 100 to 98. Their title number went from 86 of 87 to 84 of 84. Before the round, 86 already meant winning all 29 in practice, since no run of 29 matches totals 86; now the figure says it outright, all 28. Their top three number went from 85 to 82, which 27 wins and one draw reach exactly, so the margin there is still a single draw. Lille and Rennes have no title number, because their ceiling is 97 and Monaco's is 98. Monaco are still the only club whose tragic row is empty in all three columns, top three, title and relegation.

At the bottom, the preview said Marseille and Le Havre were the only clubs with no survival number, and the only two with a relegation tragic number, 29 each. One of the two changed. Marseille won 2-0 at Troyes and moved to 6 points with a ceiling of 90. The survival line, now 89, is below that, so Marseille have a number, 83. Le Havre lost 1-0 at Lille and are still the only club without a win, two draws and four defeats. Their ceiling fell from 89 to 86, so they still have none. Troyes, beaten at home by Marseille, took Marseille's place: 4 points, a ceiling of 88, one short of the line, and no survival number. The relegation tragic numbers now belong to Troyes, 28, every match they have left, and Le Havre, 27, one fewer than the 28 they have left. Sixteen clubs have a survival number, from Monaco's 75 up to 83 for Marseille, Le Mans, Toulouse and Auxerre.

None of this has closed a single finish for anyone. All 18 clubs can still finish first and all 18 can still finish 18th, exactly as before the round. No club has clinched anything and no club has been eliminated from anything.

The next round runs from October 17 to 19, Korean time, and all three top three numbers are on it. The figures that follow add that one match alone to today's table. Lille host Brest on October 18: a Lille win cuts their number to 80, and a draw or a defeat leaves them with none. Rennes go to Paris FC on October 19 on the same terms, a win taking theirs to 80 and anything else removing it. Monaco go to Lorient the same day. A Monaco win cuts the title number to 81 and the top three number to 79, a draw removes the title number and leaves 81 for the top three, and a defeat removes both. Lyon host Nice on October 19, Paris Saint-Germain go to Strasbourg on October 18 and Le Mans host Toulouse on October 17. At the bottom, Troyes host Lens on October 18, and a Troyes win removes their relegation tragic number. Le Havre host Auxerre on October 19, and a Le Havre defeat cuts theirs from 27 to 26. Angers host Marseille on October 18. The full list is at.

How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum further points that guarantee an outcome even if every rival takes every point still on its own schedule. A tragic number is the number of further defeats after which an outcome becomes impossible even if the club wins everything else. A blank means no run of that club's own results settles the question. Rank ranges are the highest and lowest finishes still arithmetically reachable. Goal difference, head to head records and the official tiebreakers are not part of this calculation, so ties settle nothing in either direction: a rival who can only draw level still counts as a threat to a clinch, while a rival who is merely level cannot eliminate us, which is why our clinch marker can trail an official announcement by a day.
