Barcelona have won all nine of their matches. On October 18, Korean time, they won 5-2 at Real Betis, who had been third. They have 27 points, have scored 39 goals and conceded 9, and need 83 more points from the 87 still on their schedule to be sure of the title. That is a finishing total of 110, one above the 109 that second-placed Atletico Madrid can still reach. Atletico won too, 1-0 at Espanyol, so the line did not move and Barcelona still have 4 points to spare, the same as before the round.
Everything here is as of the October 20 update. Eighty-eight of the season's 380 matches are in. Seventeen clubs have played nine, Rayo Vallecano and Levante eight, and Athletic Bilbao seven, so Bilbao have two matches in hand on most of the division. The round ran from October 17 to October 20, Korean time, home side first: Espanyol 0-1 Atletico Madrid, Villarreal 0-0 Elche and Deportivo 1-1 Levante on the 17th, Real Betis 2-5 Barcelona, Osasuna 2-0 Racing Santander, Valencia 0-0 Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo 2-1 Alaves on the 18th, Malaga 2-5 Real Sociedad and Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla on the 19th, and Getafe 1-1 Rayo Vallecano on the 20th.
The top four line fell from 105 to 104. A top four line has to clear the fourth highest ceiling among a club's rivals, and a rival who can only finish level still counts. Before the round that fourth ceiling was Sevilla's 104. Sevilla lost 4-1 at Real Madrid and are down to 101, and the highest ceiling below the top four is now Real Sociedad's 103, after their 5-2 win at Malaga. One above that is 104, and Barcelona's 27 plus 77, Atletico's 22 plus 82, Real Madrid's 21 plus 83 and Betis's 19 plus 85 all come to it. What each can still drop went from 9 to 10 for Barcelona, from 4 to 5 for Atletico and from 3 to 4 for Real Madrid. Betis lost, kept their number, and their margin fell from 4 to 2. Real Madrid moved up to third and Betis down to fourth.
Below the top four the arithmetic is close. Real Sociedad are fifth on 16 points with a ceiling of 103, one short of the line, and a top four tragic number of 29, every match they have left. Sevilla are sixth on 14. Athletic Bilbao, with their games in hand, are eleventh on 9 points and can still reach 102. Nobody else carries a title number, and the title tragic numbers run from 28 for Atletico and Real Madrid down to 22 for Malaga.
At the bottom, the total every safety number points at fell from 97 to 95. Three clubs go down, so the bar sits one above the third lowest ceiling, and the three lowest are now Malaga on 91, Valencia on 93 and Elche on 94. Elche drew 0-0 at Villarreal and are on 7 points, one short of the bar with no safety number, but they have no relegation tragic number either: losing every remaining match would leave them on 7, and only 16 clubs are already above that. Valencia drew 0-0 with Bilbao and are on 6, and Malaga, still without a win after nine matches, lost at home to Real Sociedad and are on 4. Both carry a relegation tragic number of 29, every match they have left.
Seventeen clubs hold a safety number, from Barcelona's 68 up to Levante's 88. Racing Santander and Espanyol both lost and are on 8 points with 29 matches left, so their numbers are now 87, every point left on their schedules. Osasuna beat Racing 2-0 and climbed from sixteenth to tenth on 11 points, one of four clubs on 11 with Alaves, Celta Vigo and Deportivo. Nothing is clinched and nothing is eliminated, and every club can still finish anywhere from first to twentieth. The next round cannot change that: after it the widest gap in the table can be 26 points, with at least 28 matches, 84 points, left for everyone.
The next round runs from October 22 to October 27, Korean time, with eleven matches because Levante host Athletic Bilbao on the 22nd. Atletico Madrid host Deportivo on the 25th, and on the 26th Barcelona host Real Madrid and Celta Vigo host Betis. Barcelona lead Real Madrid by 6 points. A Real Madrid win at Barcelona would cut that to 3, a Barcelona win would take it to 9, and a draw would leave it at 6. Elche go to Rayo Vallecano on the 24th, Malaga to Alaves the same day, and Valencia host Villarreal on the 25th.
How to read these numbers. A clinch number is the minimum a club must still collect for an outcome to be guaranteed even if every rival wins every remaining match. A tragic number is how many more defeats make an outcome impossible even if the club wins everything else. A reachable range is the highest and the lowest finish still arithmetically open. A rival who can only draw level still counts as a threat to a clinch, while a rival has to finish clearly above a club to eliminate it. Goal difference, head to head records and the league's tiebreakers are not part of the calculation, and matches in hand are counted as the points they could bring.
