If Andrea Kimi Antonelli never scored another point this season, seven drivers could still finish ahead of him and an eighth could draw exactly level. That is what an 81-point lead actually looks like with nine grands prix and one sprint still to run. It is also why his clinch number is 153: that is how many more points he needs to be champion no matter what anyone else does.
Every number below is computed from results through the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, September 13, the fourteenth of twenty-three rounds. Nine grands prix and one sprint remain. That leaves 233 points still available to any driver and 402 to any team. Nothing here is a forecast.
Antonelli leads on 292 points with eight wins from fourteen races. The 153 comes from a single comparison. George Russell, second on 211, can finish the season on 444 if he takes everything that is left. Antonelli on 292 plus 153 is 445, one clear of that ceiling. Put the other way, Antonelli can drop 80 of the 233 points in front of him and still clinch on his own account. Drop more than 80 and he needs someone else to slip.
The only driver within 100 points of the lead is Antonelli's own teammate. Russell is 81 back with two wins. Lewis Hamilton is third on 191, 101 back, with a ceiling of 424. Lando Norris is fourth on 186, 106 back, ceiling 419. Charles Leclerc is fifth on 167, 125 back, ceiling 400. Max Verstappen is sixth on 145 and has not won a race this year; he is 147 back with a ceiling of 378. Oscar Piastri is seventh on 120, 172 back, ceiling 353.
The 233 is also the elimination line. A driver more than 233 behind cannot reach Antonelli's current total, let alone his final one. Isack Hadjar, eighth on 71 points and 221 back, clears that line with a ceiling of 304. Liam Lawson, ninth on 59, is exactly 233 back, and his ceiling of 292 is exactly what Antonelli holds today. One point for Antonelli at Baku ends that case. Pierre Gasly, tenth and 251 back, is the first name the arithmetic has already removed, and thirteen more sit behind him. Nine of the twenty-three drivers are still mathematically alive.
The constructors' table is further along. Mercedes has 503 points and ten of the fourteen wins, and needs 258 more to clinch outright. That is 258 of the 402 a team can still score, leaving 144 points of slack. Ferrari is second on 358, 145 back, with a ceiling of 760. McLaren is third on 306, 197 back, ceiling 708. Red Bull is fourth on 230, 273 back, with a ceiling of 632 that still sits above Mercedes' current total, so they survive on paper. The RB F1 Team, fifth and 426 back, is beyond the 402 available and is out. Seven of the eleven teams are eliminated.
The season resumes on Saturday, September 26 at the Baku City Circuit, round 15. Round 16 follows on October 4 at the Sepang International Circuit outside Kuala Lumpur; our data feed files that race under a name that does not match its venue, so we refer to it by date and circuit. October 11 brings Marina Bay and the only sprint left on the calendar, the last chance for anyone to bank points outside a grand prix. Austin and the Circuit of the Americas follow on October 25.
The 153 is not a date. It is what Antonelli needs if every rival takes everything left, and the actual clinch is a simpler test: the lead has to be larger than what the nearest rival can still score. Baku and Sepang cannot meet that test. Win both and Antonelli is on 342 with 183 points still on the table, while Russell alone could reach 394 from 211. Marina Bay on October 11 is the first weekend where it can be met. Win the next three grands prix and the Singapore sprint and Antonelli is on 375 with 150 points left, which settles it only if Russell is held to 13 points across those three races and the sprint, Hamilton to 33 and Norris to 38, each of them ending the weekend on 224 at most. Austin on October 25 is where the margin opens up: the same run of wins puts him on 400 with 125 left, and Russell could take 63 points along the way and still finish a point short.
How to read these numbers. A clinch or magic number is the minimum a driver or team still has to score to be certain of the title even if every rival takes everything left on the table. A tragic number is its mirror: the point at which the outcome becomes impossible even if you take everything left yourself. In a points championship that line is simple, because it is just the gap measured against what remains, 233 for a driver and 402 for a team. Ties are counted against the driver or team in question, so our clinch can trail an official announcement by a round, and F1 rounds are a week or more apart. F1 itself breaks a points tie on wins, which Antonelli would win 8 to 0 against Lawson; we do not give him that tiebreak.
